Rear shock absorbers

Featured Replies

Off side rear shocker is leaking so needs to be replaced. I have bought an anschler one from euro car parts and the only shocker they sold were gas pressured ones. Is it okay to change to leaking one or best to do the other rear too?

@BRADBELLWOOD Always change dampers in axle sets!

Even with that being the case, you'll want to make sure you use the same make/model of shocks on an axle. I get the impression that the OP is being supplied with a shock which is different from the one that's currently fitted. If that is the case, you'll want to replace both sides.

If the current shocks are getting a bit worn, it may be wisest to replace both anyway

And probably also replace the foam bumpstops (and possibly even the dustcovers for those) because they generally start breaking up after a few tens of thousands of miles, or will breakup anyway when you try to change them from the old shocks to the new ones. You can get kits with both bumpstops and covers from ebay/Amazon etc., but get the apppropriate length ones as the estates have longer ones (ride height is higher than standard) , and VRS versions  have shorter ones (ride height is lower than standard).

From the notes I made some time ago, the VAG P/Ns and heights of the bumpstops (sometimes referred to as "stop buffers") are:

1K0511353J = 100mm,      1K0511353Q = 101mm,    1J0511353S = 103mm , 1J0511353N =118mm       1J0511353F = 118mm      1K0511353M = 133mm
