Any help before I break it

Featured Replies

Hi got a few problems with my mk1 vrs se.

Been super busy at work and never had any time to fix it so the problems that started first I was going to do in the factory shutdown, but sadly it's not gong to make the final day at work as it completely goosed.

started with a wheel bearing which was singing but had no play in wheel etc so thought it'd be ok for 2 weeks, then the hand brake light, abs and another light would pop up now and again or sometimes stay on with hand brake light flashing and beeping. Then the next time you drive it no abs lights etc but I put it down to the wheel bearing. Then the next problem that popped up was the power steering would go heavy with steering light on, again get in and start sometimes it was fine with fully working power steering then others it was heavy but still could drive it to work. Had same symptoms on my mams car and was the pump so thought my might be the same. Again sometimes you'd have both power steering and abs lights on etc then other times one or the other then none at all, just randomly. Then last few days it seemed to me as if it was slightly missing on idle and interior light would flicker on and off, then radio will sometimes just keep stopping then play again, but finally just now turn engine off and the central locking is bouncing about and if you put ignition on the dash light are just flicking. Oh and boot won't now open and the alarm won't turn off via key and have just final shut up and pressing the lock/unlock buttons on key the little latch thing on top of door card by the glass only lifts a little up buy one press of key, instead of one click on key it should pop right up

any ideas? Fed up big time

Sounds like your battery is dying. Check the voltage after it has stood for a couple of hours, should be greater than 12.2 volts And again when engine is running should be around 14.3 volts.

Sounds like it may be the dreaded broken load sensor wire, now the battery is probably goosed as well since you've kept trying to use it instead of fixing it.

Hardly a good enough reason to break the car!

It's had loads of faults since I've had it, just fed up of it. Problems would be fixed when they occur but since getting rid of my golf r and still searching for a weekend car I've left with one car and zero time to pull it to bits when I need it for work. Checked that load wire about 2 month ago and was fine, il check again. Car starts up first time every time as well

Too scared to even start messing about with it in case the alarm goes off again haha one sound I can't stand. Il have a look at it on Saturday and check what you said. Be nice it that's all it was

@Chris9292 - The easy check for the alternator control wires is to make sure the battery light comes on when you first switch the ignition on, then goes out when the engine is started.

A "well flat" battery can lead to a "graceful degradation" scenario where the ICE, ventilation fan, ABS and traction control are progressively turned off to save power for the EMS and electric PAS when applicable.

Just took battery off and took to my mates to read it, it's sitting at 16v. was hoping it was going to be low then he'd of charged it and I could of refitted to car and got a reading of battery whilst running to see if alternator was charging. 16v seems very high

16 volts is far too much.

Get a second opinion (second multimeter) on that.

^^this

I would say that it is impossible for a disconnected lead acid battery to read more than about 13.5 volts never mind 16 volts.

Cheers , il get a second reading of battery and go from there.
