I have a 6th gear?

Featured Replies

Very confused.  Recently purchased a 2001 4x4 elegance 1.8T for an engine conversion project.  I don`t know how I didn't notice it before.  But the car seems to have no 2nd gear, but magically it has a 6th gear...

Any ideas? I haven`t actually driven the car as such and It was delivered to my garage on a low loader.  It's just this evening I have got close to finishing the project and I was going through the gears in the car after a gbox oil change and noticed this strangeness..

Is it possible to fit the shifter/gearstick unit and/or linkages the wrong way around?  Because if you treat the magical 6th gear position on the gearstick as 1st I do have 5 gears and a reverse gear.. it's so weird.  It's like the gearstick is mirrored.

It looks like I go into 2nd gear ok on the video, but it doesn`t even feel like its moving into a gear, if you know what I mean and you can see the shifter doesn`t self centre either... and even stranger there is a 6th gear...  when its a 5 speed gearstick.

Now that is odd. I don't suppose you've had the engine started and run the car to see what the actual gear ratios are in relation to the gear levers position?

Yes tell me about I!  I haven't yet.  Sorting out the exhaust at the moment.  I am planning to fire the car up soon then I will see what happens when I shift gears.

Go on www.dieselgeek.com and have a look at the videos on resetting the cables. As it looks like they’re out of alignment.

I did this only yesterday on my petrol vrs, not to sure if the same on the diesel.

I have a 4x4 too with 6th gear. Its an easy job to swap the gearbox alot of owners did it to improve mpg but not many swap the knob as they are hard to find and expensive.
