Having to top up header tank

Featured Replies

I've notice that my header tank level has dropped - I filled it Sunday night (on the level) and having driven 200 miles yesterday, I noticed this morning the level has dropped from just above the Max mark to the 2nd X from the top.

Are these engines renowned for anything water wise like EGR cooler etc.  I'm guessing its more a weep than a leak (at the moment anyway).  I cant see any signs of water anywhere.

Any ideas?

Water pump issues on the diesels are pretty common. I'll see if I can find the thread.

The only damp ive seen in the enginebay was this morning and it had collected on the under tray.  I had driven about 9 miles - put this down to aircon dripping condensation from compressor, so I turned aircon off, drove another 18 miles and the same area was then bone dry.

A friend with a 2015 Scout 184PS recently had a total failure of the water pump and complete loss of coolant so seems possible there is a theme

I would say water pump too.
There are several forum users who had a leaking water pump on the TDI.

This is not to be confused with another issue on the same part where the electronically controlled sleave was sticking.

This didnt result in coolant loss just temporary overheating.

I would monitor it for a few days to see if its really going down or just due to changes in temperature/expansion etc.

My 2.0 TDI waterpump shredded its inside apart, water was free flowing onto the ground like Niagara falls. At certain times (I didn't work out the conditions), you can see the water drain from expansion tank like draining a bathtub. But sometimes (eg. when RAC van came to authorise relay), it was only dripping.

New timing belt + waterpump, £485 fixed it.

water pump on my TDI went last year....
