Kessy security problems

Featured Replies

Don’t know about the Superb, but on a previous car it activated when the car was locked and deactivated when the start button was pressed. If you can bypass/clone the Kessy system it’s not going to be much use.

I'm confused.

As Kessy has no physical key mechanism on the steering column, how is the wheel locked?

As I read it, the Thatcham article suggests that from 2019 Kessy cars will get lower security ratings than conventional key cars unless some major, as yet unspecified, improvements are made, which will affect current cars as I don't see VAG being able to upgrade them. They're not going to issue new keys free, that's for sure.

Insurance premiums will go up for those vulnerable cars.

On mine the steering wheel locks as soon as the engine is turned off by the stop switch. It stays locked until the engine is started - just pressing the start button doesn't unlock it.

I know there must be lots of safeguards in place, but I think I prefer it activating once you’re out of the car. I’m just being fussy though… remember when older conventional steering locks could be engaged by removing the key... while moving :o

My wife had the key in her handbag and got out to run into the shop, while I was still driving around the carpark. DOH!

I got a warning the key was no longer detected, but it worked for the 2 minutes it took to park the car.

How long do you have in this situation?

Answer my own question ... the car will continue operating until you shut the engine off.

A friend of mine has a Kia Sportage with keyless go, for what ever reason he put the keys on the roof while he rummaged for something in his pockets, got distracted and forgot about the keys, the car started and he drove off. He is still looking for his keys

I wanted to see if the same would happen with the Superb and thankfully the car would not start. His Sportage did have a summer roof though (not open lol) so not sure if that makes the difference.

I think I posted this before somewhere, but I once drove the car round to the front door then got out to let SWMBO drive, leaving  the engine running.  She told me that the "key not present" warning was on the maxi-dot the entire time I was walking around the front of the car to get in the passenger side (never more than a foot away from the car) and it only went out as I sat down. I also once deliberately tried to start it with the key held at arm's length out of the window - nothing doing. So I'm pretty confident the key on the roof scenario wouldn't happen, and if by chance it did you would be immediately aware of it as the key slid off the roof.
