Leaking thermostat housing.

Featured Replies

Hello all,I have a question for the team.On Monday I renewed the cambelt, idler, tensioner and water pump on my 2005 Fabia 1.9Tdi and at the same time renewed the thermostat whilst the coolant was drained as the car was very slow warming up last winter. All went well and I filled up with plain water to check for leaks.Run the engine up to temperature,no problems apparent, drained out the water after the engine had cooled down and refilled with antifreeze mixture. When I crawled under the car to replace the undertray,I noticed a tiny drop of antifreeze on the bottom of the sump.On further investigation as it was a pig to access/see,it was the thermostat housing with just a slight leak.Gave up last night and removed it today.Renewed the o-ring and refilled.I am still not convinced that a plastic thermostat housing is a good idea and have something in the back of my brain that is telling me that these housings have been modified to cure the problem.Lastly, when the old stat came out it did not have the o-ring around the periphery of the stat,I am wondering if that was the cause of slow warm up by allowing coolant to bypass the stat.Sorry about the long post.Any ideas anyone.

@maccy - Are you 200% certain you got the old thermostat o-ring out? 2 o-rings instead of 1 can cause a failure to seat properly.

Absolutely certain Ken,the old o-ring was stuck to the cover and the thermostat was wobbling about inside with no o-ring around the outside edge.I did about 10 mls today and when I got back could not see any sign of a leak.I have been out on my motorbike for  a few hours tonight and as the car was parked on a dry level spot,I took a torch out to it when I got back, and had a good look around the underneath and in the engine bay,no signs of any antifreeze anywhere.I even managed to just get a fingertip to the bottom of the stat housing and it’s bone dry,so hopefully it’s sorted.I assembled it with the new o-ring that came with the stat around the outside and a new normal type o-ring on the housing, not sure if that is correct but it seems to have worked.

I did about 30mls.today and the car definitely warmed up MUCH quicker and no leaks so that seems to have cured that problem.I went to the nearest TPS to me and tried to buy a couple of hose support brackets. They could not find them on their system.I looked myself last night on an online parts site but to no avail.I have put a couple of pics on to see if anyone has any idea what the part numbers are.One is the bottom hose support just above the sump line and the other supports a coolant hose and the vacuum hose to the vac.tank and is located behind the alternator.Thank you in anticipation.(Somehow the second photo went to a new post)

Part numbers are usually somewhere on every component, if you look carefully.

Hello Wino,I have looked carefully on the nearly complete clip, nothing, also on the remains of the broken clip, zilch.I even tried a temporary repair but they are so brittle it just shattered. The parts bloke at TPS looked also and he couldn’t see anything and his eyes were at least 50yrs.younger than mine.We looked together on his screen and nowhere was there any pipe clips listed.Looks like I might have to make a couple up instead of the tie wraps that are on at the moment.I even thought about going to a breaker but I reckon the clips would be as brittle as mine.
