Felicia fitting handbrake cable

Featured Replies

I have had both of the rear handbrake cables fitted and shoes changed by a garage I supplied the parts, for a short time all was well but now the handbrake is hard to pull up so I went back to the garage and he tells me the cables entering the handbrake tunnel the nylon in is not long enough and the cable is running on the cable feral (hope that make (sense)  well I have now got two new Borg and Beck cables and these look very well made not like the ones fitted.

As I am a older guy and fit I was wondering how easy is it to replace both cables I understand how to do this it is just the crawling under the car puts me off I have all the tools I have a good mechanical bend as I have restored so many motorcycles over many years.

The garage I use is very good but it is going to cost me again and pension do's not go a long way so what would you say go ahead and do the job or should I pass it to the garage to do.

Silly question I know but would like any advice thanks. Ho the car is a Dec 1998 Skoda felicia 1.3 MPI

Not sure why the garage didn't call from the beginning for new cables if necessary. I don't get it clearly from you what is wrong with old cables. Maybe you should explain in chronological order since the problem occurred. Something like "a week ago out of the blue the handbrake did this... so I was told / I decided to buy this and that... then next day parts have been replaced... then next week this happened... so they told me I need more parts... etc." Maybe I'm tired or got old but I'm not sure I got who made the calls, why and when.

As my Felicia was 20 years old I needed new rear shoes and I thought it was about time the handbrake cables were changed (20 years is a long time for a cable) so I purchased the cables and shoes of EBay and got the garage to fit them and they did so hence the problem as stated above it seems the cables were not up to scratch so I have purchased a new pair.

There was nothing wrong with the old cables, I am the type of person that do's not wait for something to go wrong and then change it.

There is no chronological order there was not a problem I just wished to change the cables as stated.

Thanks for the reply but I just wanted to know if any one had changed there cables and found it a hard or easy job lying under the car, any way her in doors tells me not to do it and take it to the garage my mind say do it but my body will say no.

If you have a rolling cart to move under the car, changing the cables at your age is easy. The only thing that may go wrong is the steel clamps that hold the cables. They rust heavily.

Thanks for your reply RicardoM.
