New estate - Skoda Octavia or Leon ST (FR)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

New to the forum! Looking to upgrade my 10 plate Golf TDI to an estate.

My commute is 12 miles each way, with only 5 or so miles of that on the Motorway. So I've decided it'll be Petrol for me next as Diesel doesn't really make much sense, and since having a daughter I rarely do the miles to visit family and friends to justify a diesel.

I'm currently torn between two cars: the 1.8 TSI Leon estate (FR tech trim), or the Octavia vRS 2.0 TSI (227bhp version). I know the Leon is cheaper to buy (with PX and cash, I can get the Leon on hire purchase for the same monthly payments as a vrs on PCP).

But, given I'll get a handful of long trips (200 mile round trips) I'm after some advice on what the economy can be like on a fully laden Octavia VRS, whether it's worth the extra power, and how fun it is to drive as an estate (and how it handles when full - I ask because I don't expect a dealer to let me load it up with  drum kit and guitar cabs, or loads of suitcases). And to see if anyone has owned both cars (i expect, this being a skoda forum, it'll be a bit more biased to Skoda!), and what the residuals would be like on a petrol vrs (if anyone has experience of it).

I've looked at the normal trim Leon and Octavia estates, but they don't really do it for me. I want a practical performance car without breaking the bank, and something that looks nice too. Id be looking to buy early next year, and looking for something that's 1 year old

Thanks!

I've been looking at a lot of cars recently and to be honest the Leon and the Octavia are about the same size. I've test driven an estate vRS 2 days ago and we've decided that the boot and rear legroom is just not enough for our family so I've started looking at Superb Estates. I would highly recommend you go and take a look and the price difference is actually not the great. The Superb is defintely a league higher in quality and refinement, The boot is MASSIVE, the biggest in the business.

Th economy on the vRS petrol is nowhere near the advertised figures, I would go for the diesel but then again do you want a diesel vRS. I would rather have the Superb 190PS diesel in that case. It's just as fast. The vRS drives very nicely however even though it's quite bouncy (not sure how it is with the DCC) and tire noise inside is loud compared to the Superb.

Thanks for the feedback. Id looked at the superbs and my wife reckons theyd be too big for her to drive if she needed to - the Leon and Octavia pass that test.

Was the test drive on bumpy a roads, or did you get to open it up a little bit?

It was on local roads and motorway.  Tire roar gets quite loud at 70mph. Best is to try both back to back and see.

Superb has sensors, rear view camera, and self parking if needed. She’ll be fine :) my wife is the same

Once ur inside the superb driving it imo you do not really notice the size difference too much. Although the car is a lot bigger having gone from and octy to a superb recently

Yeah Superb different League

Hi,

before deciding for my diesel 4x4 VRS, I (statically) tested a Leon FR Estate and I found it definitely less roomy than the Octy.

Of course the Superb is even larger and more comfortable, but I think the handling of the VRS is more precise.

My experience on the ride comfort is very good both in town and on motorway. It really depends on the tyres (brand and pressure) and on my 2018 VRS is much better than in my previous 2014 Elegance.

HTH,

Objectively, the Skodas are always a nicer place to sit than a Seat. Everything's just a bit too dark.

Would a Golf Estate be too small for your needs?

Shapewise it's more practical than the Leon ST, (driven a few when looking for another car for myself, a bit cramped inside but fun to drive).

SWMBO owns a Golf Hearse & I've had 9 days of driving it on a recent holiday. We took far too much "stuff" but it coped quite well when loaded.

If we needed to replace my Superb with a new car, a Octavia vRS ticks most of the boxes,, but  I/we feel that the refinement  could be better,

if VW would allow Skoda to spend the extra pennies.........

Driven nicely In can get my 230 Saloon ( 66 plate ) into the mid 40's ( mpg ) on a run. Around town mid to low 30's

My last drummer got all of her kit - shells, cases, stands, the whole shooting match - in her Suzuki Alto

I was able to get my amp, cab, the guitarists valve combo, 3 guitars, my bass and 4 or 5 bags of cables etc in my Scirocco R and it was still ridiculous to drive :giggle:

Given the sports suspension on the VRs, your kit and a couple of cabs, guitars etc will be fine and should handle almost as well as unladen as long as the weight is distributed sensibly. I used to be concerned with the extra weigh of hauling gear but when you add it all up it's the equivalent of a couple of people in the back so as long as everything heavy is pushed up towards the front of the car then it shouldn't handle any differently

In the Alto even with passengers? I've used my golf as a tour mobile, but haven't been able to get 3 dudes including me and all the gear in there!

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Going to keep my eye out for a vRS, but I'm picky with colours so will see what I can get!

Just the one passenger in the front
