Hints on fitting a non-skoda replacement for Bolero?

Featured Replies

Has anyone got any hints on fitting a non-Skoda replacement for a Bolero in a Skoda 2 FL (2010)?

I've bought a https://audiotechdirect.com/pba-sk7826s-android-8-after-market-radio-for-skoda-octavia/

which the seller said would connect without any adapters. It comes with a lead with a bunch of tails which may be needed to get the steering wheel switches working; I hope it isn't.

I hope there's no need for coding too.

Thanks

knowing what the cables look like I dont see anything which will connect to any of them.

There is no quad connector which is the main connector to the headunit and nothing which looks like a steringwheel control adaptor.

You will probably have to fork out more cash on a adaptor aswell.

Why people dont buy pioneers android units instead of these things i dont know.

They don't include a picture of the back of the unit for that model, but this one is pretty much identical.

I'm hoping that most stuff just plugs in, and that I don't need to faff around finding the wires from the steering switches

Are there any tips on e.g.

The battery should/shouldn't be disconnected before swapping a radio?

What happens when the power comes back on, if it was off (e.g. the windows forget their movement range or something)?

Will VCDS be needed?

Thanks very much

I just removed the Bolero radio with the battery connected.

Then brought out the replacement and had a look. The replacement has the right connectors for Fakra and the main block, but the Fakra connector is oriented at an angle so that the aerial cables would stick out sideways. I think they'd catch on the side of the space the radio goes into and maybe get damaged if I tried to bend them sharply.

I put the Bolero back in after 5-10 or so minutes and it was fine; no need for a code thankfully and it still works.

Any thoughts?

It is plug and play and you are correct about the Fakra connector being 180 degrees out but you can rotate them on the connector block so they clear the back cradle, just turn both of them 180 degrees and it's done, connect the ISO plug and GPS and the wifi aerial and you are done, no need to disconnect the battery, all functions for wheel, Parking sensors, AC, doors etc will be displayed on screen.

Another tip is you can add a USB cable for phone charging or link up and there is enough space on the surround that you have popped off to run the cable down and into the lower cubby hole, just run it down the left side and pop the surround back on over it.

thanks - just what I was looking for. Good idea for running the cables. I'd like to put the mic somewhere too.

Fitted and working now. Radio is fine and tuned quickly. For all music I love the sound compared with the Bolero; I think the Bolero has a kind of bass boost turned on that I didn't like.

The steering wheel controls do work as advertised without extra wiring.

The AC settings are shown on an overlay when I change them, not that that's super important.

The reversing sensors overlay could be bigger. It also seems to take a couple of seconds to pick up the outer two sensors.

Although the product description mentions playing music from an SD slot, there isn't one that I can see so I've put two USB cables into the lower cubby hole; one for a USB stick.

There dosn't seem to be any logic behind the sort order in which albums are shown in the music app.

I wish it was possible to switch albums using either the steering wheel buttons or the track skip wheel and tracks using the other. That way I wouldn't have to look at the screen. Or... it'd be great if voice control was available.

The SD card slot is under the lower right button, it's a cover not a button, keeps it looking clean, the left lower button is also a cover for the GPS card ;-)

I also bought a cheap compatible USB dashcam, works quite well, it's not HD but it's damn clear enough and records looped to the SD card, think it was only about 15 quid.

Also on the steering wheel controls there is another setting in there where you can specify what they do.

Ahhhhh - about the SD slot  didn't see it in the instructions. At least I have 2 USB cables in the lower cubby hole now

I wondered if trying to set the steering wheel controls would mess up them automatically just working currently.
