Loose yellow wire in boot?

Featured Replies

Folks,

Has anyone got a loose yellow wire in the boot, near the spare wheel? I was poking around yesterday and came across this wire, it is slightly to the right of the centre, and comes out from under some plastic trim, the end of the wire has a white sticky pad and some foil,   Is this a spare wire or is it some critical component that has not been properly connected?

From the Facebook group it is a wire fitted at the factory for testing moisture levels in the car. It should be like that.

When the wheel well fills up with water a message will come up on maxi dot saying " Wheel Well Full "      Simply Clever

Did'nt know about that feature, Thanks!

Will it be wire for tow bar prep?

I don't know what it is but yes I have one.

Can't find any sign of this on my Kodiaq 1.4TSI SE Manual 2WD.

I found it under the polystyrene packaging that holds the tools for the spare wheel.

Which FB group please? I don't recall seeing this so maybe it's a group I'm not aware of.

I do try my best.

As I said it was not my opinion but from another discussion and I'm not going to argue with the Skoda Tech that informed the OP of the original FB discussion of its purpose.

Yep, but BoxerBoy knows what it is. I wish he would tell us . It's certainly not normal car wiring of any description.

There is a fine wire wrapped spirally around some kind of cloth core. The spiral wire appears bare. If there were another wire down the centre of the cloth core, then it would be a perfect design for doing just what was described as it would nicely measure the reduced resistance cause by the moisture impregnating the cloth and partially connecting the inner and outer wires.

But of course that's just stupid?

Time for science!  Put some water in the wheel well and bung the end of the wire in it, to see if it does indeed bring up the alleged warning :)

I can't imagine much moisture ingress as the car rolls along the factory production line.

However, given the length of time Arnold Clark sat on their early 2017 stock (see the recent thread), whilst probably sat in a farmer's field somewhere or on a dockside, then there's every chance the car is sopping wet through inside by the time the dealer gets to put it through a PDI.

Quite what they'd do if the moisture was high though.

What about when they do the water leak test? If the boot seal hasn't been fitted properly?

I doubt very much the warning mentioned exists. It's probably only connected to some piece of production test equipment that is unplugged before shipping.

I don't think I could of contained my curiosity enough to ask about it on a forum, I would of just looked where it went to.

Have you taken the tape off the end yet?

Just put some water in a cup and put the wire in it!

I originally wrote that - and then realised that the device could be measuring change in resistance between the wire and the bodyshell of the car.  The cup would insulate the process!

Let's hope the process has improved from this one used in a VW Golf factory...
