Headlight low beam & high beam stuck

Featured Replies

Hello everyone new to this forum ! Sorry if this is not the right place to post about this ...

I have a Skoda Octavia year 2004 mk1 i think and my headlight have stuck together if i put the low beams on the high beams are on if i change the steering column indicator to high beams the low beams turn off but if i let it in the normal position they are both on like if i put the indicator in the flashing position ... i dont know what to do is there e relay that i have to replace or is it the the indicator stalk ? Any help much appreciated !

P.s sorry for my english

First - well done, its in the right place :)

second - english isnt the worst ive read here, from native english speakers :D

third - some help.

first thing to try as its is the easiest is :

take the top part of the steering column cover off to expose the switch box of the stalk.

Then, spray a lot of electrical contact cleaner in to and around the indicator/light stalk.

Let it soak and dry out for a while.

Then test your lights again.

The inside of the switches gunge up over time and can cause bad contacts and odd light activity. A good clean out is often enough to fix a problem.

If it doesnt work, come back and we can help with deeper diagnostics :)

Thanks for your help much appreciated ! I will try it out tommorow morning and i will post again

@Angelito - Firstly, which headlights does your car have? Most of them have either H4 halogens one bulb each side which use separate filaments in the same bulb for dip and main beam, or a plasma discharge unit (often misnamed a Xenon) as a permanently lit "dip" and a separate halogen bulb as main beam.

I can't see any way of getting both filaments lit on the H4 fitment except selecting dip on the rotary headlight switch, and then pulling the dip switch to flash the main beam.

Hello and thanks for your reply ! I have the h4 bulb that has the low and high beams together . The problem is that when i select the low beam in the rotary selector the headlights are in the flash position (low and high beam turned on together) if i push the indicator switch the high beams stay on and the low beams turn off but if i leave it in normal (low beam ) position both beams stay on ! IF i pull the indicator switch  again both beams stay on . They even iliuminate both beams in the dashboard ! I will post some pictures later .

@Angelito This sounds like you have a problem with the dip switch mechanical functionality, which is causing the default position to give you both dip and flash at once. I have a horrible feeling that the only remedy is a new switch unit, which will have to be ordered from the factory.

@KenONeillYeah .. that sucks .... The problem isnt the part itself. is getting the part out. is there anyway i can do it without taking the steering wheel off ? And is there MAYBE a relay elsewhere that may be at faUlt ?

There's no access to the front of the switch stalks until the wheel (and airbag) come off. The usual functioning of a headlight relay on an H4 equipped car is that it makes the main circuit and breaks the dip (or vice versa) as you push or pull the stalk. The flash function is (well should be) made using the main beam by pulling the stalk against a spring, which is why you can make both filaments in each bulb light together by having the dip on, and then using the flash function.

@KenONeill so there is no way that is the relay at fault ??????

P.S Just for my curiosity where is this relay location ? If you have a pic or a link that would be really helpful .

Earthing issue?

Wd40 isnt really an electrical contact cleaner though, its a Water Displacement (recipe no40...) agent and mild lubricant.

The contact cleaner formula will actually clean the metal down and then evaporate away in the switch.

Not sound grumpy, but using wd40 probably did nothing of note. Try and get some and see if the that works.

Also, if there is a relay, its likely built into the stalk, but iirc its literally just a switch set, not a relay controlled unit?

Thanks For the info i didnt know that about wd-40 . Probably i have to wait for the switch to come and replace it to see if that fixes the problem . After that i will open the switch to see what did go bad and post some pics .

Thanks for your help everyone
