Windscreen replacement with heat

Featured Replies

I had a stone chip my windscreen few days ago.  The current one does not have heat in it but i was wondering if i could replace it with heated windscreen and try to figure out the effort needed to do this.  Can anyone answer that for me?

I’m sure you could replace it for one with the heating elements in it... but you won’t have th switch to turn it on.

It'll be a lot of effort and cost.

The biggest issue might be getting the required wiring installed whilst the old screen is off the car, then getting the windscreen fitter back to fit the new screen once you're done.

Assuming you're claiming through your insurance, and paying the ~£75 excess, then your insurance company will only fit a direct replacement. If you want a heated screen you'll need to pay for this yourself. I'd imagine you wouldn't see much change out of £300 if you were buying one privately.

As mentioned, you'll need a new switch, and the coding needed to configure everything. It'll be fused and probably have it's own control module buried deep behind the dash. I suspect you'll also have issues with any features that utilise the sensors behind the top of the screen too, if the car was configured from the factory without a heated screen.

You'll also need to find someone to do it for you? An auto electrician, someone with VCDS, the windscreen fitter, and then tie everything together, a logistical nightmare.

I think it would be cheaper and easier to swap your current Kodiaq for one with a heated screen already fitted.

I sympathise though, the desire for a heated screen was one of the reasons we had to go for a factory order. When we were looking (March 2018) there were hardly any Kodiaq's with them fitted, let alone one that hit all of our other needs too. As of today no models get it as standard either (until the L&K finally arrives), so the only cars that have it fitted have had to have the option deliberately added and paid for as an extra.

To top it all off, my last car only had Lane Assist (compared to some of the complicated systems the Kodiaq now has), and Autoglass completely screwed up the fitting of a replacement screen, getting the Lane Assist recalibrated was a real issue, to the point I gave up. As with everything these days, things are getting complicated, some might argue unnecessarily complicated!

Good luck!

thanks for a good answer :)

There`s a chanche.

Nowadays most of the cars are equipped with identical harnesses.

You probably have wiring, but you do not have switch and some relays.

I had a heated screen in the yeti but never needed to use it but I suppose it’s all about location

No, they mostly aren't. They use a system called KSK where the harness is built to the specific car.

I'm not sure on the technology for this screen, but some use an inverter to increase the voltage for the screen. So maybe it's more than just a switch needed.
