To buy or not to buy

Featured Replies

I am in the market for a family hauler, something comfortable that has space and is RELIABLE. Having owned a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T (Tiptronic) and a 2008 W211 E300 4Matic (Auto) I'm looking for that type of driving experience. I can't seem to find any info on the reliability of the Mk1 auto transmissions, but the torque converter Tiptronic should be reliable, right? I checked out a 2005 Superb and it seemed a little neglected (2013 tyres and rusty rotors) but the interior was really holding up nice and I was amazed at how tidy it looked under the hood. It is a 1.8T Auto with 155,000kms (~100,000miles). If I could negotiate major service items into the price (timing belt + water pump, all fluids and filters, front control arms and bushings, tranny fluid + filter, pads + rotors and a nice set of Bridgestones) would it be worth it or should I run away and never look back? Is the Automatic as bad as it is in the Mk1 Octavia? In my region diesel is out of the question. I have included a link of the photos for better visual representation. https://www.car.gr/11090352-skoda-superb-1-8-auto-s-r

If you could box out all of that, then why not?!

If the transmission fluid has not been changed every 40k miles they usually die shortly after 100k. Looks nice otherwise.

Thanks for your replies. Still open to experiences from Auto owners, is 100k all they really last, if i have it reconditioned and baby it with fluid+filter changes every second service would it last longer per se? I have read the reverse gear drum grenades, is there a stronger replacement? Any machinists that would make an indestructible one out of titanium :D
