Shaking

Featured Replies

Hey everyone. I wonder if someone could help, im sure you can!

ive just bought my vrs 2 weeks ago and loving it! Everything was absolutly perfect until last weekend. As soon as i go above 50mph, the steering wheel is violently shaking.

when i bought it, i replaced all 4 tyres and had the tracking done. I have jacked each corner up and there seems to be no obvious sign of bearing play.

Any suggesuons?

thanks in advance

A thing to check are the wheel weights. I've had it when my van had tyres and I was getting a judder from the rear. When it was checked, it was found one of the weights had gone and that was the issue.

Certainly sounds similar to your issue

New weights were put on when i had the tyres 2 weeks ago. Is there a chance one could have come off?

Yes.

Ive just checked and there are no obvious marks where one could have come off. Any other suggestions?

thanks

Even though it may not be obvious (but then if they went so quickly I wouldn't expect to find much glue on the rim) you should still have each wheel checked. It really sounds like they are not balanced. Did you hit any major potholes? Have you been driving through dirt in such a way that dirt might get stuck on the rim and represent an uneven weight?

I cant say i have hit any potholes nope. Il get the car in on Monday to get them checked! Thanks for all the input guys, very much appriciated

Defo get rebalanced, National tyres once did mine and didn’t bother doing the rears! The weights are ‘only’ stuck on so could easily come off and if it was soon after the tyres were done it wouldn’t be obvious.

Tyres first, then could be gearbox final drive bearing issue.

Probably best getting the balancing of the front wheels checked and if it is that then it's cheap to fix.

check the wheel bolts are done up right...I would jack each wheel up & undo the wheel bolts... just enough to wobble the wheel on the hub...then re-do up star pattern & torque up....sometimes they air gun them one & the wheel is actually slightly squint on the hub...

Those which go on our wheels are just stick on ones. Ideally, you're supposed to clean the surface..............but you're stereotypical tyre gaff has probably wiped it with a rag and then stuck it on.

A bit of dirt, usually means a bit of water can get underneath and with the rotational forces of it being a wheel can result in it going for a burton

I was thinking about this earlier. Ill get the car in the shed tomorrow and do each wheel individually and see how it goes. Does anyone know the correct torque for a vrs?

After further inspection today, it turns out one wheel (rear offside) has no weights on what so ever. Should they always have weights on? Im guessing this could be the cause of my issue?

Would that cause the steering wheel to shake?get them to recheck the fronts,it will only take a few mins.

As a rule of thumb:-

If the steering wheel shakes at higher speeds then check the balance of the front wheels.

If the shake is felt through the seat at higher speeds then check the balance of the rear wheels.

A bent wheel or low tyre pressure can also produce shaking.

A rear wheel, very badly out of balance can make both the steering wheel and the seat shake.

Most wheel/tyres even if new WILL need balancing, but occasionally they might need no weights.

You can even find an old/repaired tyre and wheel needs no weights.

Wheels/tyres can become out of balance due to things like, low tyre pressure, impact with a pot hole

and alignment issues wearing the tyres unevenly.

A shake at lower speeds could be a bent wheel or a tyre going out of shape.

Thanks for all the reply. Ill get it into the tyre garage tomorrow and ask them to recheck everything for me
