New 1.5 Oetrol Engine

Featured Replies

Dues anyone’ have any knowledge of when the new 1,5 petrol engine which replaced the 1.4 petrol engine , is going into production I spoke to customer services today but they didn’t know other than it’s not started yet. Just wondered as I’ve ordered one but the order has not been sent to the factory as of yesterday.

Cheers.

If customer service don't know then all you are going to get here are 2nd/3rd/4th hand rumours.

The VW group are in deep s@#t meeting the WTLP process and cannot issue firm dates.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/volkswagen-deliveries-halted-wltp-emissions-certification

"In anticipation of the delay in deliveries due to the WLTP certification, Volkswagen has begun stockpiling new cars produced at factories around Europe. 80% of those cars are already sold, however."

The delay has left Volkswagen with growing customer unrest as delivery times on popular models are forced to be extended, with some Golf variants delayed by as much as six months, according to German dealer sources, who described the situation as “disastrous”.

"Autocar is awaiting comment from other Volkswagen Group manufacturers, such as SEAT, Skoda and Audi, regarding whether or not UK deliveries are being affected."

Same issue is under discussion on the Octavia thread, with dealers hamstrung by a drastically reduced range with only three engines currently available (1.0 and 1.5 petrol/ 1.6 diesel). Delivery times don’t bear thinking about.

Audi, VW, Skoda and Seat will be raiding each other’s factories soon. What a mess.

Exactly. It’s not like a letter arrived in the post this morning, they must have known about it for over a year at least one would imagine.

A lot of the problems at VW are of their own making of course.

There must have been a toxic working environment in R&D for 'dieselgate' scenario to occur anyway but you can imagine it got a lot worse after, and compounded with the distraction of creating 'fixes' for the original issues.

Some engineers would have been pushed, some would have jumped ship to the many other manufacturers setting up in East Europe, either way they have probably lost or disenfranchised a large part of their talent pool and by their own admission the lack of skilled resource is why they are struggling to meet targets.

I am no expert but looking some details of the WLTP protocols I've seen are as much about bureaucratic revenge as improvements in reporting and emission compliance, I cannot help feeling that opportunities for real improvement for consumers were lost.

I thought it was in production and it fitted to Audis, daughter has an A3 with it.

It is, but the engine is used across such a broad spread of Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda vehicles that the big-sellers are prioritised. The Superb is not a big seller.

Combine that with the lack of availability of other engines (because of the WLTP emissions issue) and you have a huge mismatch between supply and demand.

Any 1.5 TSI being first registered after August 31st 2018 will have the WLTP Approval and will have a Gasoline Particulate Filter unless it was built before the 1st June 2018

and the manufacturers applied to be able to Sell & First Register under the Derogation rule.

That is for End of Line Models, tested under the old system and only 10% of those First Registered in 2017 can be First Registered if they are not WLTP Approved.

I'm sure the new 1.5 Oetrol Engine will be released as soon as Oetrol becomes commonly available on forecourts. :blush

I ordered a 1.4 TSi SE-L Estate in May 2018 and was told that the order would at some stage morph into a 1.5 TSi engine in a MY19 car.  Build week was projected to be Week 38 (which I think was last week?) and the dealer told me last week there was no change to the schedule.

As I understand it, all new cars built since the start of MY19 production in Week 36 will have the 1.5 TSi.  (AFAIK it's not a new engine, just new in the Superb.)

Don't worry, I've checked and it seems your car has arrived at port ready for shipping...I managed to catch a photo before it was loaded....looks like a few changes to the spec...

Oh dear - looks as if they are further behind with shipping than the dealer was prepared to admit ...

That's a bit worrying that you have inside information and pictures of my car. Your source should be revealed ,what else do you know?

That length of time seems to be about the same as the one I have been given , I ordered the car August and not expecting delivery much earlier than December /January.
