Brake pad wear

Featured Replies

I have just replaced the rear pads on my 180 BHP DSG, estate 2015 model.  I have done 71,200 miles.  I had a hell of a time using the OBDeleven to retract and "unretract" the automatic brake pistons.  They went "open" OK although the device insisted that I upgrade to the Pro version then insisted I purchased more credits.  When I came to "close" the pistons I had a lot of hassle getting the device to work, again having to purchase more credits.  Changing the actual pads was easy but I phaffed about with the device for about 3 hours!  What surprised me was that when I checked the front pads they had loads of wear left.  I have normally found that the front pads wear first and that the rear pads/shoes last for ages.  Is this what others have found?

It means that you apply the brakes lightly most of the time and the rears are applied first to reduce the nose dipping.

It is a Skoda/VW feature and also reflection of your driving style.

I found the same thing on my mk2 Octavia but the wife drives the current mk3 more so brake wear will be more evenly distributed.

Same here, 89k and still on original front pads and discs.

So obdeleven a disappointment, I wonder if Carista is better for this job.

I have never heard of the Carista until your post.  Having had a look it looks good except the annual subscription.  The OBDeleven problems I had might just be user error although I am normally quite good. I also see there is the Torque Pro Elm (Android only?) at £12.00 from Amazon.

How much did you spend on obdeleven (initial cost) plus pro upgrade and then credits to do brake service?

Did you do one side at a time (open/close) or both together?

Did you ever feel it would leave you in limbo - i.e. brakes open, unable to close?

Xman.  I paid £39.38 for the device.  Then was charged another £30 or so for the pro upgrade.  Then about 4 - 5 lots of £1.49 (about this much) to buy credits to get the thing to function.  And yes, my fear was that I would be left with the EPB left open, hence why I just coughed up when it kept asking for more credits.

Not good.
