I use Ring Smart Charge RSC608/ RESC608 Does standard/ start stop/ AGM and EFB batteries.

I got a Ring RSC612 a couple of years ago and it's been fantastic. Topping up the Octy battery occasionally and managing to bring back to life a completely dead battery from the Citigo that was standing for about 18 months unused too.

Could be old tech by now though? Not needed to look recently.

Hi!

I tried to use normal car battery charger, it can charge up to 50% but no more, I will have a look this one, is it for Agm car battery?thanks

I have this one

& it's been faultless, I've only had to use it once on the vRS but I have let my friend borrow it, as he does up cars etc & he's used it loads of times & really rates it, I got mine with all the leads (bundle deal) probably within 2 years ago now & only cost me £65.00 at the time, the bundle deal seems to now be £93.99

CTEK MXS 5.0 (56-975) General Information

  • Latest 2018 model
  • Comfort Connect compatible: Yes.
  • Input voltage: 220-240VAC, 50-60Hz.
  • Output voltage: 14.4V, 14.7V, 15.8V.
  • Charging current: 5A.
  • Ripple <4%.
  • Ambient Temperature -20 deg.C to +50 deg.C, output power is reduced automatically at higher temperatures.
  • Cooling: Induction.
  • Charger Type: Eight step, fully automatic charging cycle.
  • Batteries: 12V lead-acid batteries (Wet, MF, AGM, Calcium/Calcium and GEL).
  • Battery size: 1.2-110Ah.
  • Dimensions: (L x W x H) 168x65x38mm.
  • Insulation: IP 65.
  • Weight: 0.6kg.

With stop-start technology becoming increasingly widespread, the new 2014 model MXS 5.0 now gains a dedicated mode for AGM batteries commonly used in this type of vehicle. It also gains multi-mode functionality (denoted by the red mode button), meaning it's now possible to select AGM and RECOND charge profiles in any mode - so you can run a recondition cycle on a smaller battery, or optimally charge a small AGM to the correct voltage.

Temperature compensation is now also taken care of automatically. Where the previous model required manual switching into cold weather mode by the user when required, the new model now uses sophisticated internal electronics to detect ambient temperature, adjusting its charge fully automatically. This results in improved charging in extreme cold and reduces the risk of overcharging in very hot conditions.

The MXS 5.0 is a charger that offers state of the art technology that was previously only found in CTEK's professional product range. The charger can solve a broad range of battery-related problems and is the perfect charger for those with high demands. The MXS 5.0 offers features such as battery diagnosis that shows if a battery can receive and retain a charge, a special reconditioning function that restores stratified and deeply discharged batteries, unique maintenance charging, and a mode for optimised charging of demanding AGM batteries (i.e. Optima). The unique display allows the user to follow the entire charging process.

The MXS 5.0 is a fully automatic 8-step charger that delivers selectable 0.8A or 5A to 12V batteries from 1.2-110Ah. The charger is IP 65 rated (splash and dust proof), designed to protect vehicle electronics, non-sparking, reverse polarity protected and short-circuit proof. It also includes a 5 year manufacturer's warranty. .

If your battery is really 100% so why is it going flat? Minimum battery standby time for an unused car is over a month. (Quiescent current current drain on my Superb with the engine/ignition off is less than 15mA on average)

I'd be checking your alternator first and then battery. Engine running, headlights on, should be around 14.3 volts.

Check your battery terminal voltage after it is stood at least 4 hours. If its less than 11.7 volts you probably have a duff cell, a common reason for a failed battery. The minimum voltage at 25 deg C should be at least 12.2 volts (battery more or less flat) to 12.7+ volts (battery full).

Check all lights (eg interior, boot) are off, no things like a USB charger are left plugged in.

Get the battery load tested, most service outlets, quick quick fit type places will do it free of charge.

Thanks, that is cheaper place is well, so will order, Tia

Ctek. The best.

Thats kind of funny.... I'd have expected Halfords to suggest the battery was ok but you would be better off changing it in the near future. (They do sell 'em, you know).

You don't mention the age of your car but I doubt even a year old car will have a 100% perfect battery, unless it was replaced. Its a very strange, emotive term to suggest it.

I have a tester that says between 75%/100% When the battery is on the car and running but there is no way of knowing if its 75% or 100%, just somewhere in between. It may be good but not necessarily perfect and most stop/start cars are gonna need near perfect.

I have read of many owners saying the stop/start won't operate as the battery is a little low, despite being easily capable of running and starting the vehicle.

My stop start function only works if I do long runs, but if I do 15 miles runs, never works, probably need to change battery. They connect that meter and said you just need to charge up and that's it

Yeah, that sounds like the battery is charging but not to full capacity...

They stop art a certain point, even tell you they are fully charged but that charge is a now lower capacity then when new.

A bit like fitting a smaller battery. It will charge and work up to a point but go flat quite easily.

I think its worth fitting a new one, especially if you could "Borrow" one for a few days/weeks. Swap with a mage or something to see if they get issue and you don't.

I have Fabia with no stop/start but the battery did the same thing after about 5 years so I got a new one. That lasted almost 4 years and had a 5 year warranty. The replacement then did the same thing. Charged, worked for a few weeks, failed again. So I exchanged it under the warranty and now, good as new!

I even mentioned here, on Briskoda, the new one I picked up a few months ago was not even fully charged. You assume them to be but I tested it and it was about 60% charged, if I remember rightly so they might need charging even prior to fitting!

I too, use a Ring smart charger, when off the car and it was this that told me the new battery was not full to capacity. (The little on car, traffic light tester one may just have said between 50%-75%).

So if you do replace, check and charge first!

I got the charger from Halfords, the battery from Carparts4less, who delivered the next day.  (Replaced by Eurocarparts, via local brach).

CTek

I have 3

I bought 1 but then needed a more powerful one to charge the dual battery setup in my 4x4, and also for my leisure battery. Was impressed with the CTek ßo got a bigger one.

Then got a small one to trickle charge over winter as it was cheap in amazon prime deals.

You are also able to get a variety of different attachments.

My local Skoda garages uses them on the cars in the showroom.

What do you think about noco genius 7200uk they look similar

Sounds like it has had a short but worthwhile life. I think the days of the standard battery lasting ten years prior to failing is now behind us. Small petrol engines like my old Yaris had that sort of longevity but my Skud, which is used fro driving tuition, well, half that is lucky!

ive got the optimate 7 and its a really good unit. brought loads of dead batteries back to life for me. i keep the vws on trickle over the winter as well and conditions batteries too. Not cheap but quality isnt anyway.

it even detect current leakage in your vehicle if thats the issue causing the flat battery.

My choice is ctek or noco

Why have my cars never need charging? 15 year old Focus that does a couple of thousand miles a year and a 3 year old Octavia that does less than 5000 miles a year but sits on the drive for weeks at a time. I thought car battery chargers were a relic of the 1980s.
