My brother owns this Fabia which is a 2014 75ps 1.6 TDi SE with 42k miles on the clock in what was pretty much immaculate condition before this accident which happened today. He and his girlfriend are both OK thankfully and from what I can see of the image it’s probably going to be an easy write off, however, and I know it’s speculative, what would the collective opinion of the forum be regarding an insurance value and a buy back value? I’m thinking if it’s cheap enough I’ll have it to replace the Citigo as we’re starting to outgrow it and it’d be nice to be free of the finance. As long as the B post is OK I could live with the dents in the sill and just bolt the rest on if it were viable. It would have to be really cheap to make it worth it to me but we’ll see.

Hi there, sorry to here about your brother's accident.

In my opinion it depends on whether the structural components of the car are damaged, as you stated if the b pillar is ok the car can probably be repaired. Also i would very closely inspext the front left wheel and suspension assembly as it could have been damaged by the impact.

Pleased to hear all are safe and well,  Oh.......It needs a wing mirror.

Let it die or go to kerbside motors for a cut and shut.

 

Is that another one that the type of collision had no airbags deploy and the DVSA / UK Government / Insurance Industry are happy to write off and be sold on and go back on the road without any inspections?

Not even a MOT required if repaired and on the road again with a valid MOT running!

Thanks everyone, should say I’ve plenty of experience repairing crashed cars so the labour side of it wouldn’t be an issue. The state of the A and B posts really determine the feasibility of the whole enterprise. The dented sill is of no real concern as the damage that looks like impedes the door could be sorted easily. Tracking, wheels, suspension and brakes are all points to note but the main thing is how much they are going to want for it. I’ve known this car from new as my mother ordered it and had it for 2 years before selling it to my brother who has had it for the last 2 years so I know everything about the car and yep, no airbag damage so it could just be returned to the road no problem. As I’ll be doing the repair and I have plenty of contacts in the motor trade who will inspect the car for structural rigidity and safety once it’s repaired, please be sure the car will be safe if I choose to take it on. I would not take a risk on a poor repair but as it’s in my hands all the way I can oversee the process in a way unlike a normal bodyshop repair. It all comes down to money as it only happened late yesterday there’s a little wait to see what the assessment of the car will be.

The car need the full electrical / safety check.

 

Odd things is Airbags do not deploy, not the correct incident / angle of crash, but then they never know or test should they have and years later there are Recalls on Faulty Airbags.

I have seen some real joey'd up accident repair write offs.

Seat Belts need replaced, Seat Belt Tensioners etc.  The disposal of write offs in the UK is a total joke and leads to the high number of stolen cars and ringers.

Actually as the Car is Assessed by the Loss Adjuster and given a class of damage the Examiner / Estimator should cut the Seat Belts so that they are replaced.

They might just end up with 'Used ones' from some other accident damaged write off, but then that is how the UK insurers allow it to be.

Tbh if they cut the belts I won’t scrimp, I’ll get new ones from TPS. Both front seats were occupied.

So what are we looking at here? New wing, passenger door, rear door and not forgetting the wing mirror. The fact the air bags didn't deploy is a bonus, it was a side swipe. The car will have a DVLA insurance category N against it (formerly category D) so insurance and selling on will be an issue, if that's not a problem, then crack on, especially if you know the history. Quick check on Autotrader assumes a retail price of £5-£6k, probably less given specification. What would I offer? Start at £600... what have you got to lose?

I was gunna start at £500 and take it from there haha. The assessor has been round and they are writing it off, just a case of finding out what they will be interested in taking for it. Either way my brother or I will be having it back as he’d like to keep it. If he changes his mind then I’ll have it. Either way it’s staying so I’ll post up some pics of it all repaired as and when

Car has been declared Cat S write off and they have accepted my offer of £500. I hope to have it out of the salvage yard by the end of the week and then I’ll be cracking on with the repair  The yard it’s in have offered more than that to my brother but he’s been good and let me have have it at cost price from the insurers. At least I have an outlet if I choose not to go down the repair route. Admiral have offered £5100 minus excess which is a more than fair offer IMO. I’m going to his house tonight to look through some replacements. Octy 2 is a keen front runner to replace it

They started at £600, I went for £400 and after a bit of back and forth we ended up at £500 which is 10% of what they are calling market value. Looking around I am seeing similar ones for £4000 odd. I’m hoping to have it all repaired and roadworthy for under £1200 all in. Nay bad for a 14 plate Fabia with 40k ish on the clock. They have decided to call it Cat S as they can’t tell if there is any frame damage so it’s a gamble but we’ll see how it goes.

Good news. Think once you've repaired the doors and wing, that sill may bother you. Would be easy enough to use plastic padding and paint. The finish isn't critical given it's location.

It would have been, except I sold it for £700 without even collecting it. Salvage yard offered to buy it and settled on £700 leaving me £200 up and when up close in the light of day it’s sufferered a lot. They plan to have the apprentices repair it with the senior guys watching over then use it as a courtesy car. I was looking forward to the challenge but it’s easier for me to leave it and be £200 better off

There is over £1,000 breaking it, Engine & Gearbox, parts.   Or they will be getting it away for the £1,000 + to someone else to repair.

It might have a few more owners yet.

However to break it for a £1000 you need a scrap yard in your back yard and loads of tools and lifting kit

Yes, like a Salvage Company has, or some other breakers yard, like breakers have

or just people. Lock up garages quite often. Or even front gardens...

Should be pointed out that to recover that £1,000 the car needs to be stripped and parts documented and photographed and put into storage. If the scrap yard is part of a group, then there's a fair chance they'll shift the parts via online shop. If not, you're looking at EBay or Gumtree and that's a long haul plus postage and time wasters. For the record avoid breakeryard.com (absolute shower to deal with).

I hope those alloys end up on ebay, I'd take 2 if they were cheap enough

The alloys were not long refurbished and shod with 4 new Continental tyres :( New car has been bought now, a 2013 Fabia 1.6 TDi 105 Monte Carlo Tech in White

Breakers will probably make well in excess of £1000 on that car.
