Removing door lock mechanism

Featured Replies

Ok, I'm new here -  I have tried searching the forum, but since English isn't my native tongue I might have done it wrong. Skoda experts, please help!

My problem:  driver side door when opened doesn't activate interior lighting, and it's not possible to open the boot without opening one of the other doors. To me, it sounds like a problem with the microswitch in the door lock mechanism.

I've stripped the interior of the door, but I can't seem to find a way to get the cable from the exterior handle off. Am I supposed to loosen the exterior handle, and if so, HOW?

To remove the cable you have to remove the lock cylinder by removing rubber grommets in the edge of the door and releasing two screws. The cable is gripped by plastic teeth and has to be correctly tensioned (small amount of slack in it) on replacement. To release the cable from the lock unit end you turn it until it releases

I'm a bit uwell at the moment and can't go into much detail but there's some info here...

Thanks mate! Turned out the switch wasn't stuck, but broken. So I put everything back together, hence spending the best part of the weekend accomplishing nothing :D

Will give it another try some other time, hehe.

They usually are broken. You can buy the switches on ebay but be aware that the plastic covering on the switch operating cam on the lock unit can be shredded too, so a new switch may not work.

Thanks a lot! Given it up for now, only reason I wanted it to work was to be able to open the boot without having to open another door (other than drivers) first. While putting the door card back on, I realized there's actually a handle on the floor, operating a cable opening the boot! So all my work was twice in vain, so to speak. First, I didn't fix the problem, then the problem suddenly wasn't a problem in the first place.

Jeeez, I'm an idiot. I really need to learn to RTFM before I jump into things.

Once again, thank you for your input! You're great! (y)

More than welcome :)

You will soon get sick of having to use that cable release inside the car - I did

Haha, suppose you're right! Though... I'm used to owning a Honda Civic, so pulling a handle to release something (in that case the petrol lid) isn't much of a nuisance. Far worse was the fact that the lid was on the "wrong" side of the car, me living in Sweden with right hand traffic.

Well, come spring time and you will be proven right. Knowing myself, I'll be ripping it apart again.
