Steering wheel wobble

Recommended Posts

Evening,

Ever since we bought the MK1 VRS it's had a wobble / vibration on the steering at 65mph upwards. Had wheels balanced, but just the same - opted for new alloys and tyres but again same..

Drop links changed, no sign of wheel bearing issues (rocked wheels while up in air)

Has anyone got any other ideas?

Cheers..

Could be a number of things mate the next thing I would change is brake discs people say its only when u put your foot on the brake they vibrate but I've had it a few times while driving. Is the car lowered?

Forgot to add, new discs and pads on front, new rear caliper on rear as thought that was sticking..

Doesn't seem to be on braking just cruising at over 65..

Cars not lowered, standard set up..

May check the shocks next to see if that's the issue??

Oh the joys of an old car!

Could be worn shocks.

Check track rod ends for play, both inner and outer.

Check driveshaft for worn splines ( gearbox end).

Check for lateral play in final drive.

An MOT centre could check out the whole lot and all the bushes too.

Could even be tracking, did you check the wear on the old tyres?

Wear looks ok, I will get the local garage to check this lot...

Cheers

Do you get any knocking on rough surfaces?.

Check your lower arm bushes, also check the rack to subframe bolts are tight, together with all the items mentioned above.

There is a slight knock over bumps but I've put that down to an unsecure exhaust (it's in at Demon Tweeks for a new mid section Sat) it's knocking on the chassis..

Will try all the above too.

Thanks

Wishbone rubbers.

My old Leon did it but was only apparent after I fitted bigger brakes.

Jack it up and take the wheel off. If the wishbone hangs down the the bushes are tired

Fit TT solid rubber ones

I'll check them out, thanks!

So had it in today for exhaust at Demons and asked the guys to check all bushes.. seems the anti-roll bar bushes are shot..

Getting them done shortly, hopefully that will solve the problem!

Worth doing but I'd be surprised if they were the cause. If your ARB still has the plastic collars then I'd recommend removing them and fitting smaller diameter bushes (17mm instead of 19mm I think).

When the suspension is unloaded surely it would extend fully whether the wishbone has a TT bushing or original knackered one.

The TT ones are a great OEM+ upgrade though.

Could well be a buckled wheel. Worth asking about when you next get them balanced.

OP did say he's fitted new wheels and tyres. But still worth checking - a buckled/out of balance wheel may only be noticeable above a certain speed. Jacking the car up and spinning the wheels should be enough to spot a buckled one. If one of the front wheels is buckled/out of balance then swapping the wheels front to back might give some clues as well.

No they dont, I've fitted them to my VRS as well.

Was refitting the near side drive shaft earlier and had to hold the wisbone down to slot the ball joint in place.

They sag far less than the lower spec versions with gaps in

Ah, you said jack it up and take the wheel off. Of course with the hub disconnected from the wishbone as well it's a different story.
