2010 TDi DSG - DPF and general reliability

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Been doing a fair bit of googling but can't seem to find what I'm looking for - so thought you all may be able to help/advise :)

I'm currently looking at purchasing a 2010 TDi 170, DSG model. It has a little over 50k miles on it and looks pretty clean, with FSH. It's not far short of 9k - is that steep or reasonable in your experience? I also have a few concerns though.

Firstly, I don't do huge miles. With this in mind, am I likely to experience problems with the DPF? I'm not keen on the delete idea, since it could mean emissions failure at future MOT time, if I'm not mistaken ?

Also, how reliable are these cars in general? I'm a bit of a tight arse (admittedly) and spending 9 grand on a car is a fairly big deal for me. I'm usually a 2k runaround kinda guy. The thought of spending 9k on a car and still having the same problems as I get on my buckets gives me the fear.

Anyone got any advice or reassurance for me ?

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry - didn't quite say the exact model - it's the VRs estate model Octavia. Cheers :)

Full Main Dealer Service history would mean the VW Emiisions Fix would have been done if a car that needed it. That can be an issue.

Then what was done on the Service History, Oil & Filters.

Was the DSG serviced at 40,000 miles with a receipt showing that as done / paid for.

Brake Fluid changed in 2013 and 2015 if serviced to manufacturers guidelines?

Any Warranty History for works required, a Water Pump replaced maybe?

You might also want to add what kind of journeys your intending to do.

You say you're a low mileage user, is that going to be many short trips or infrequent longer trips? The former isn't ideal for a modern diesel as it won't get to temperature and could cause various issues including with the DPF.

Firstly, apologies for the very delayed reply. I don't normally get to spend much time online and what little time I've had recently has been spent trying to find the right car!

With advice given and research in mind, I have ended up with a petrol vRS. My low annual mileage and short journeys lend themselves more to the petrol engine I think. Time will tell I suppose. :)

Thanks again, much appreciated.
