Columbus SIM Card Slot (or lack of it)

Featured Replies

I've recently upgraded from an Octavia vRS 220 TSI to a Superb Sportline 280 4x4 Estate (and it's very nice indeed!).

The car was registered Sept 17 and has the newer Columbus 9.2" unit - however in the glove box the media unit does not have the SIM card slot in between the SD card slots.

The user manual appears to indicate that there are 2 different versions of Columbus (one with the SIM and one without). Is this correct (something to do with the change over between model years?). If so, how does connectivity for Skoda Connect or the WLAN functionality work for example?

Interestingly I have set up Skoda Connect (initially connecting to my home WifI) and the app appears to work fine (I can see where the car is parked, the last journey info, honk the horn / flash the lights etc). I assume the WLAN connectivity just requires pairing with a phone in the car?

Yes

Mine doesn't have a SIM slot but I pair it up with my phone. This can be done by making a hotspot on your phone and connecting the WLAN in the car to it. Skoda Connect doesn't work on mine as I didn't spec it but not too fussed.

OneApp does work supremely well though. Both through Apple CarPlay and also Android Auto.

SIM card slot was an option on my June 17 built L&K with Columbus/Canton system. Skoda Connect would work via WiFi hotspot on Phone, but was very unreliable and screen would get very hot if using Nav. Costly after 1st year particularly as it hadn't worked correctly for most of it. Android Auto would work using cable providing most of the information on the move functionality and is free. Use Waze in built up areas and Google maps in remote areas.

Tracker isn't a security feature as it can easily be switched off by changing privacy settings.

I still find this confusing. Yes, Apple CarPlay works really well and while I'm in the car I never fell I miss out. But for being able to use Connect remotely, i.e. whilst at work and wishing to start heater in advance - say leaving earlier than planned, there is no possibility to connect with the car unless buying an internet dongle connected to the USB port.

Which seems kind of messy solution, could also increase risk of theft.

Am I missing something here?
