Engine cover foam

Featured Replies

My engine covers got dandruff. Covering the engine in yellow dust. So I'm thinking of just ripping the foam off. Should I stick something on or just leave it's underside bald.

Any suggestions on what to stick on ?

Leave it, all that weight saving your power to weight ratio will be crazy!

Depends if your bothered about the extra noise, if you'd even notice it. Any replacement foam or self adhesive accoustic deadening would need to heat/fire resistant

Hi Aubrey. Hope you are well.

Funnily enough, my foam is disintegrating slowly, too! I was thinking of using some of that under bonnet stuff you get, to insulate the bonnet its-self. I think it should be fire retardant so up to the task. Might be worth popping off the bonnets own blanket and lining the bonnet, too and putting the blanket back again.

I have seen a company that does ready to fit insulation for under the bonnet. Not as cheap as cutting your own, but will definitely fit properly. Then, get the uncut stuff, just take your time, copying the stuff that is decaying for shape and placement and Bob's the chap who married your mums sister, or something like that!

P.S. The company I saw, produce a whole car's worth of sound-proofing but it comes in at around £200-or so, plus delivery for a kit. All pre-cut except the door internals as they let you decide whether to strip the doors to fit this, which is supplied. Takes a few hours to fit, perhaps half a day but you can fit bits at a time, I guess. I have thought of fitting it but the car is already ten years old, or so. If I'd have seen it from new, I most certainly would have fitted a kit!
