Timing chain service

Featured Replies

I have a 1.6fsi which has a timing chain and has done 90,000 miles. Do i need to have it checked/ serviced at any point. There does appear to be any specific problem so far.

Sometimes i hear little bit of low volume rattle  when I lift the foot up from acceleration which is not always there.

Please advice, given the 90,000miles mileage i need to look at have the timing chain look at and what would they look at for the chain. Thanks

Have you checked the owner's handbook?

Yes, I checked but it does not say anything about the timing chain. I know it is an important thing, so thought I will ask here.

I know timing belts are changed at intervals but no suggestions about chains in the handbook....

Unusual, I would have thought the owner's or service manual would say something.

Phone a dealer for the latest information if internet searches don't help.

Timing chains are not normally service items and are supposed to be fitted for the life of the engine.

Of course, VAG have been known fit chains that don't last very long, notably on the early tsi range. But technically they last the life of the engine, which expire when the chain drive goes bang.

Afaik the 1.6fsi isn't prone to timing chain problems, so unless its started to rattle I would leave it alone.

All cam chain engines must have regular 10k/1 yr  oil changes, extended or variable regime servicing is bad for chains that don't tolerate old or contaminated oil well.

For longest life use 5w40 full synthetic oil to VW502.00, or change the oil more frequently.

Thanks.

Just one more clarification about coolant pump and coolant. Because of the Chain never needing to replace, the pump and coolant have not been changed. Do i need to consider changing them...

Yes always simply clever to consider the Manufacturers guidelines and service schedules or advice and the cars use and drivers, location etc and Preventative Maintenance and just general servicing and maintenance.

Not easy with the VW Group as they never know, then somehow have trouble with just getting km converted to miles or Fleet Buyer / user advice and those buying cars as keepers advice to tally.
