Water Pump

Featured Replies

Last Friday, I noticed that the engine management warning light had stayed on after starting the engine. I tried stopping and restarting the engine but the light remained on. The car seemed to be running OK so went to work as usual (about 18 miles). Popped out at lunchtime and still the light stayed on so made an appointment with the dealers to get it looked at. That evening, on the way home (the light was still on) I called in at the dealers to have a quick word and as a result, they bought my appointment forward to today. Well, would you believe it, on leaving the dealers, I started the engine and the light went out and has stayed out ever since. I told the service department this but they said to bring the car in anyway as a fault had probably been logged

My wife dropped the car off at the dealers this morning and about an hour later, got a phone call to say it was the water pump. They will get one on order and call the car in as soon as they get it - in the meantime they said the car is OK to drive. Didn't say what was wrong with the pump but I assume it's what appears to be a fairly common problem of it springing a leak. The car has done 33K miles and is in warranty until December 2019 so I hope this won't cost me anything.

No shouldnt cost anything. If it was going to they would have quoted u before ordering and arranging for u to come in for it.

It will be a warrantable repair

Ah yes, that's a thought :)

Mine had the same problem a couple of weeks ago and it is the secondary water pump (there are apparently three water pumps).  Does it take a long time before you get warm air in the cabin?

First visit to the dealer was diagnostic and the light was extinguished on collecting the car - presumably because they reset the system.  The pump was changed a few days later. Coolant level dropped slightly between the diagnostic visit and the fix.

Last Wednesday down near Avignon the light came on again - car is in today to see what the issue is and my money is on it being the same issue.

Hard to tell at this time of year as it hasn't really been cold enough yet to want is warm air in the cabin.

I'll check the coolant level when I get home tonight and have a look round for leaks. Other people on this forum have reported leaks from the main water pump that have contaminated the cambelt so could be that.

Have had a look at the workshop manual and 2 of the pumps are electrically powered. One is described as the 'Charge air cooler pump' and the other as the 'Heating backup pump'. Sounds like the first one feeds coolant to an intercooler between the turbo and the engine. The other probably comes one when you press the 'Rest' button to keep the interior of the car warm from the residual heat from the engine. If I'm talking utter rubbish, I'm sure someone will put me straight.

Just collected mine, they have replaced the other secondary coolant pump (v488) so it has had both replaced in the last three weeks.

I just expected them to do the diagnosis today but it is fixed.

The engine management light is back on again. Got to work today and when the engine stopped (start/stop) I pressed the 'REST' button to see what would happen and ....  nothing! So it looks as though that is the pump that has failed. Probably seized up through lack of use!

Also had this problem. Twice. First time the secondary water pump was replaced. The second time (some months after it was replaced and the same warning light came on and error code was the same they said) they took it out and tested it, and it was apparently ok, so they then traced the problem to the relay, which they replaced and no problem since then.

Update: secondary water pump failed again. 🙁
