DSG Problem

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have just bought a very high mileage 2l Tdi dsg estate which initially drove very well... after a 40 Mile motorway run it changes down the gears nicely to the junction and pulls away smoothly until 3rd gear... that’s as far as it will go, change manually and the dash will indicate that it is in 4th but it hasn’t changed gear, knock it into N and then D it will go into 6th gear and drive as it should until it changes into 3rd gear and round we go again. After being parked over night all is well again, until it’s not and around we go again.

Has anyone experienced / heard of the same and know where to start with resolving the problem?

thanks, Terry

Just to check, you're doing this while driving or when stationary? Do you know if the DSG had been serviced properly before you've got the car? I'd hook it to some diagnostic software to see if it will tell you anything more than what you're describing

D to N to Drive whilst in motion. Although there is reams of service history there is no mention of a dsg service.

’google’ has come up with suggestions such as dsg oil change, abs/speed sensors and mechatronic unit...

i have had it scanned and a fault was logged for unexpected disengagement with I had put down to me putting it into N whilst moving??

thanks, Terry

I'd advise you not to do that.

What software, if it is VCDS or ODIS, you'll get a specific error (if any), if you used a generic error scanner, you won't know what is actually going on.

So what is the high mileage it has done,

The important thing is when was the DSG last serviced / oil changed in it, and how many times was that done at 40,000 mile intervals?

If no history of being done Mechtronic Control Unit failure is to be expected.

It was scanned with a snap on unit

Mileage is now at 228000. Lots of service history but not one mention of a dsg oil change

It is interesting that out of all the errors, you (or your mechanic) sees the unexpected disengagement as the major issue, but not the intermittent no signal/communication and the wrong adaption and the ground short errors ...

You'd be the first to reach that mileage on the factory gearbox oil then ... :D

So, where do I go from here, do I need it investigated via vagcom to get proper diagnosis?

The excerpt that you've posted doesn't give us any specific info what equipment was used, it may actually be VCDS, VCP or ODIS (or it may be a generic type (i.e. Delphi) ... the errors listed should first be cleared and checked, to see what remains ... I doubt all 6 would return all at once immediately after clearing ... like @Offski mentioned, you may have a general issue with the mechatronic module (the brain of the gearbox), due to improper servicing (one potential cause, not the only one of course)

Thanks for your input, I will get it cleared and re scanned tomorrow and report back

The DSG oil service would be a sound idea ASAP - oil and filtre change may solve the issue.
