How long have your 6-speed DSG lived?

Featured Replies

I just bought a Skoda Octavia from 2007. It has a 6 speed DSG gearbox and it's done close to 240 000km. The gear shifts can sometimes feel a little sluggish, but not when you give it a little more throttle. Then it shifts good. I've ordered a OBDeleven and was hoping to do the adaptations for the gearbox. Can this be done on a 2007? Its also due for a oil-change. What's your experience from changing the oils?

I have two options when changing oil, either flush the gearbox with a machine (the mechanic has one), he said it usually takes about 12 Litres. Or do a normal drain and refill, But I read somewhere that you only get about 80% of the fluid out?

I can almost guarantee that the gearbox has never been "Adapted" after it was bought. The last owner said that the automatic gear changes stopped working for a year, but when he left the car at the mechanic they fixed some brake light problem and suddenly it came back to life!

Alot of questions, and I hope someone could answer some :)

Heres a photo of it being recharged outside my house

Do you think the gearbox has been neglected? Otherwise I wouldn't bother with any kind of flush and just do the regular change. I did the oil and filter change myself, was fairly straightforward if a little time consuming!

Its been well maintained. Oil+filter change every 60000km.

What do you think about the adaptations?

So last the DSG oil and filter change done @ 180,000 km so best just another doing now and then see how it is.

Ours was regular servicing and went at 55k ,9 years.

What do you mean, the DSG was faulty at 55,000 miles & 9 years old after once having the DSG Oil & Filter changed at 40,000 miles,

or all was well?

It was 170,000 something. So it's definitely time for a change. Where can I find info about the oil used? I imagine it's pretty expensive buying it from VW dealer!

I just bought a OBDeleven Pro, and I'm planning to do a adaption of it. Anyone done this with OBDeleven? I got It today and plugged it in. But it only scanned the engine and the gearbox?! Isn't there more things to scan? Maybe it was just because I didn't type in the code for the pro version when I did it.

I just read that it's important to have the correct fluid level. So maybe it's best to first change oil and then go from there.

Genuine oil: G052182A2 (typically you'll use about 4.5 litres, usually comes in boxes of 6 1L bottles)

Genuine filter: 02E305051C

I hunted around on eBay and ended up paying just under £100, and did the job myself, using the "top down" method - that is, draining the fluid, measuring how much you removed and then filling it up with the same amount via the filter housing.

I used this guide: https://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/dsg-fluid-drain-and-replacement-service-vw-and-audi-stronic-oil-flush/

But there's loads of info on the subject if you google it.

Seems like a good way forward. I don't know if the level is okay now, so I'd be more comfortable draining as the dealers do.

I was quoted by VW 3600sek. That's maybe 300£. But I also talked to another shop that just bought a machine for flushing gearboxes, and he said they used about 12L of oil when flushing. I was thinking that's not a bad idea, considering the mileage of the gearbox and that you can't change all the fluid by just draining. But that was 4500sek + filter. So maybe upmost of 5000sek. He said he also drove a DSG and he knew about all the problems and that they were pretty sensitive about bad oil. I know slot of taxi companies use his services. They were all standing in line when he announced his flushing machine :D

In the UK Main Dealers charge £179 for a DSG Oil Change Service.

They can charge less.

Wow that's cheap! I guess there's more profit for the dealers here in Sweden. I know VAG charges at least £80 an hour. Is that with materials as well? 4500sek is about £370.

In 'Maintenance'.

It can be cheaper and independents can be cheaper,

Main Dealers in the UK are usually £85 an hour plus VAT (20%)

We don't have that kind of fixed pricing in Sweden :dull: Looks really cheap actually. When I was going to do my 240 000km service on my Volvo V50 they told me it was going to be £2000. It's pretty crazy.

The Servicing can be a Rip Off,  £279 and nothing more supplied than a Minor Service.

1st Year Service an Oil & Filter and look see.  2nd year the same and maybe a Pollen Filter £16 rrp.  No Plugs, Air Filter or anything much.

Free Wash & Vacuuming can be expensive.

PS,

Is it in Sweden you are.

I used to know British dentists that lived & worked there and got their parts from Scotland for Volvos.

I do live in Sweden, that's why it's hard to compare the prices here and in the UK. I often buy the parts from Germany, dirt cheap if I compare with the prices here. But I don't know if there's any mechanic that helps you install parts you buy. Of course they want to sell it themselves.

You have any input on whether I should flush or just do a normal "cheap" drain and refill? Taking into account the age and mileage of the gearbox? It's hard to find anyone on the internet that's done a complete flush. Everyone seems to just drain and refill. Maybe it would be better to flush, keep it going for a longer period.

Just change the Oil and the filter if one, let sleeping dogs lay.

If there is no improvement then nothing lost you can go with the flush, i would not though.

But then my mate is the best Automatic Specialist in Scotland, i will ask him his opinion if you want me to.

Please ask!

The failure rates of these gearboxes seems to be pretty high. So either there's a design flaw (most probably) or it's something else. Aggressive oil, service intervall too Long etc etc.

Thanks for all the help by the way :)

I do not believe the failure rate is high, it is anything but.  Only un-serviced ones seem to have issues. 40,000 miles is not too long, Audi say 38,000 though.

DQ200 7 speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG have issues.

My 2003 Volvo S60 T5 needed a replacement engine & autobox before 65,000 miles.

I will go see him tomorrow.

The advice i was given to pass on was just do the standard DSG Oil Change.

Did not check my thread it should have said AT 9 years old. I did not mention about the oil change but yes it had one . I always have it serviced at correct time. One of my threads mentioned I went on that web site for MOT and found it had done another 30k with another owner!.
