Rear Window Wiper....

Featured Replies

The rear window wiper keeps stopping halfway through the sweep "pointing straight up" , at first I thought it was because the rear screen was dry "as the problem started in the summer", the wiper arm will stop halfway through the sweep even though I pour water over the rear screen, switch the wiper on and off, it will stay halfway across the window that is until I lift it off the rear screen and then it continues the sweep back to the park position.

But this morning the car along with the rear screen was covered with dew, when I activated the rear screen wiper it went halfway across the screen and stopped, I tried the usual squirting water on the screen, lifting it away from the screen but it stayed halfway across the screen, when I got home about half an hour later I switched the wiper on again and lifted the wiper arm away from the screen it started to return to the park position that is until I let it drop back onto the screen then it stopped again, when I lifted the arm away from the window it went back to the park position......

Sounds like you have either worn brushes in the motor which aren't making proper contact at that point in the wipe or you have a broken wire in the motor windings - same result.

I haven't stripped a mk2 wiper motor so I don't know how repairable they are but I suspect the quickest and cheapest route is a visit to your local friendly breaker or ebay for a replacement motor.

You're looking at item 1 on the diagram below (for a 2007 estate) but make sure you look up the correct model and year before looking for part numbers.

It could be either the wiper motor becomes dead or cabling problems.

You'll need to open the door cover to start investigation.

The mk2 wiper motor is really easy to service if it is a mechanical problem. Undo the many screws that hold the halves of the casing together. This separates the wiper motor into an electrical half and a mechanical half. Take a few pictures to make sure you re-assemble correctly.

The sleeve bearing may be seizing but easy to clean and re-grease.

The only other known problem is that the motor brushes jam in their holders so making intermittent contact. Slide them up and down a few times to make sure they are free. Or better still (difficult to do) take out the brushes and reduce their thickness on all sides with a fine emery cloth. The motor and it brushes are in the mechanical half of the case.

Another VAG common fault, you see many Audi, VW's, Fabia's etc driving around with the rear wiper stuck in one place. Had the same problem on my old A4 and Fabia vrs.

Both had same problem where water from leaking washer jet getting into the gear of arm and rusting it up. Couple of screws to take it apart, clear the rust and gunk out and regrease. (obviously see where the water is leaking too).

On my both occasions I cut and blocked the the washer nozzle so the wiper wouldn't seize again. Wiper worked fine ever after. Down side, no rear washer, I can live with that.
