How quick is the Celeron M 370?

Featured Replies

Just looking at a bargain laptop (not lost faith in the other one yet :D) and its powered by the celeron M 370 processor...

How does this compare to other processors out there. I see this 1.5ghz thing come up again, but worried that its a very GOOD 1.5 ghz, like the amd-64s (good cache etc)

Any clues. Is it worth £289 all in? (its pretty basic elsewhere, just need to info on cpu speed ;))

As fast as a 3 Ghz Athlon as far as i know. This laptop has a 1.6Ghz M370 and its easily as quick as the 3Ghz pcs in work.

3 ghz athlon? Hell!

Very tempted. As with all Dell laptops I end up selling them on for more than I paid anyway.

celerons are OK. limp, but they do work. wouldn't have one for my personal machine as the crippled cache really deos slow it a lot... it won't touch a 3ghz athlon though, and combine it with a slow laptop HDD and chipset...

however, the dell 1300 inspirons are around for as cheap as 289 inc VAT and delivery right now, which you can't possibly moan at...

You know me. Always on the lookout for some decent folding hardware at good value. ;)

This is written on a 1.5GHz Celeron M. OK for word processing and web browsing, but I wouldn't think it would do so well at folding!

This is the inspiron 1300 from Dell isn't it.

The Celerons in them are pretty decent now but not a patch on an A3000 as has been suggested.

Still for £289 it's a huge bargain

Modern Celerons Based on a cut down P4 (Netburst) are much more tolerable than they used to be and are fine for everyday use. Any of the older PII/III Based celerons are cringeworthy:thumbdwn: It's worth noting that the Celeron M is exactly the same as the Pentium M just with less cache and a locked multiplier (Drains batteries quicker) I'd still have a sempron over a celeron anyday though:)

i agree.. celerys really do suck.

The pentium M is quite a cpu.. ive got the 2.2 in my lappy and it flies at folding.. good match for my 2.6 opteron.

weeeeell, *suck* is relative. for under 300 notes brand new it's not bad. yes, it's way slower than the equivalent pentium M, but it's faster than a P4 of a few years back and that would handle XP and office fine back in the day. they're significantly worse than the non-celeron version but it may not matter to you depending on useage...

Correction folks. I've ballsed up. Bells rang when someone questioned the speed and power consumption of the M370. I just checked and my HP laptop actually runs a 1.6Ghz Pentium M. Sorry :sorry:

Pentium M Is the Best Intel Chip Since the PIII (Which It's based on), It's the Only Intel CPU I Would own myself, AMD All the way for me. My Toshiba Libretto has the 1.2GHZ Ultra low voltage Pentium M, and it's bloody quick considering! At least Intel have realised that making a processor that radiates heat like a kettle element is no way to go:thumbup:

yeah i know what you mean. My HP can run for over 3 hours on a full charge and the heat it generates in negligible in comparison to my old Compaq 950Mhz machine which roasted the nadgers off ya..

I get about 6 hours of light on my Dell Latitude D810 with a Centrino 1.8ghz , but that is using both batteries

The pentium M is a good CPU, the Celeron I have my doughts over.

When I read you had a libretto, I initially thought you had the vintage MK1 version till I read on. My vintage L110CT from 1998, is sitting right next to me running WinXP pro and connected wirelessly via a pcmcia card to my home network. XP seems ok with 64MB ram, 20GB (was 4GB HDD) and overclocked (to 266) Pentium MMX CPU. This is the computer I take on holiday for wireless hotspots due to good battery life and size (VHS Tape).

Jason, the reduced cache of any Celeron will kill the performance when folding compared to its Pentium M equivalent.

Anyone with a spare 1k, go get one

That may be, but the question then is, could you get a Pentium M equipped lappy for the same money that Jason is looking at?

I guess as a folding machine, which is what Jason is thinking of it for, he would be better off spending
