Exhaust heat shield

Featured Replies

Morning all

anybody else had trouble with these coming loose?

and the bolts being too rusty to get a nut back on.

Thanks

Yes. Frequently with old cars.

And sometimes they get torn off at the mounting points making it difficult to reattatch.

Requires creative approach to fixing. Wired for instance. In bad cases, replace shields

Soak bolts in penetrating oil, clean with wire brush, if not too far gone

They are usually held on with a retaining clip not a nut. These rust and fall off too. If you have enough of the bolt left you can probably probably fit a new one.

Otherwise your choices are to have another bolt welded on, attach with silicone sealant (will come lose eventually) or remove the heat shield altogether.

I have used Sugru on motorbikes before and it’s not failed. It’s supposed to be heat proof to 180c but not sure how it would cope in holding a heat shield in place.

Thanks very much

Will have a look at it this weekend

If it is just the heat shields underneath the car s opposed to the heat shield on the manifold, what tends to happen is, either the lightly galvanised steel plate retainer rusts and it falls off the grooved stud - probably not threaded, just grooved, or due to dissimilar metals situation - the heat shield being aluminium alloy and the retainers being steel, the aluminium alloy above the steel retainer corrodes and vanishes leaving the heat shield free to fall down over the retainer. Now in that situation, I tend to cut out repair washers from a food can/tin as anything you place in above the retainer needs to be very thin, so if you cut out large repair washers big enough to extend beyond the hole in the heat shield, and either bend the tabs back over and reuse the old retainers, or better fit new ones, this problem can easily be sorted out.
