Hi all just hoping to get some views experiences from anybody owning the Octavia estate 1.0  manual as we are looking at this car replacing our current one. Any views very much appreciated.I currently have a 1.2 yeti manual. Mainly do town driving with the the occasional long journey. The car is never fully loaded at the moment.

What is your current vehicle just so replies can make more realistic comparisons of what the potential difference in performance/economy/driving characteristics is likely to be.

You looking for manual or auto transmission, what are the likely journey types and loads going to be?

faster and more economical than the Yeti. I see the right side of 4,5l/100 on a regular basis; motorway stuff lightly loaded comes in at around 6 for 120km/h and 5.x at 100km/h. Should be under 5l average for a trip up north of 600km this weekend. 

 

Translated back, that means 400 miles, -3 to +3, average should be hitting 56mpg.

Why would you want an estate, if the current yeti is never fully loaded. The normal Octavia has plenty of space, and looks much better.

We need more boot space mainly as we now have 2 German Shepherd’s and the boot is nowhere near big enough. I was looking to change in a few months but prices of Karoq are I think well over the top and the deal I was given on the Octavia estate I would have been mad to walk away

Don't know if you've seen it, or what you've been offered, but there are some excellent leasing offers on Octavia's at the moment - some of which are discussed in the thread linked below. You can get the estate too. Might be worth a look.

Taste is subjective, but I think the hatch looks great. It's a slightly stretched Golf, it's hardly a large car.

 

4 Series Gran Coupe, A5 Sportback, Kia Stinger... All similarly sized hatches that look good. The Superb hatch doesn't look bad either and that's even bigger.

Sorry, we get easily distracted.

I would have thought that even though the Octavia has a larger boot  area than the Yeti that headroom would be worse for your two large dogs because of the sport back styling, but you would be the best judge of that.

 

I'm open to correction but I think even the FWD Yeti had a multi-link rear suspension (like the mk2 Octavia) so you might find the torsion bar rear suspension on the mk3 Octavia does not cope with really bad roads as well as your Yeti.

Personally I have not had a problem with the torsion bar rear on normal roads but it certainly does not cope with badly corrugated Australian dirt roads as well as a multi-link. I have 17" inch wheel/tyres on mine and they seem quite a good compromise on ride but I would not go any larger on a torsion beam rear.

 

Internal drumming noise can be a problem for individual people/cars and road noise can be quite bad with certain OEM provided tyres such as Pirelli.

 

The general consensus in the forum is that the 1.0tsi is not quite as tractable as the 1.2 tsi so you will have to change gears more frequently but the 3 pot does offer adequate power and excellent economy for most. Of course there are one or two who complain about the lack of power and their lack of economy but I honestly think that either their expectations are too high or their example is below par.

Obviously with this kind of engine, overtaking on single lane highways have to be well planned and you will have to change down and rev the engine a bit on steep hills but unlikely to be worse than what you currently experience in the 1.2 Yeti, probably better.

Economy, particularly on a faster/longer journey, will be considerably better than the Yeti because of aerodynamics, the Octavia has got some :) 

 

I cannot say that I have read of any real reliability issues reported for the 1.0tsi engine fitted in any model.

 

At the end of the day my usual advice is to get a good test drive to make up your own mind.

I own a 1.4tsi Octavia estate and recently have had a loan Fabia estate 1.0tsi for a few days. Both manuals. The downside of the smaller 3 cylinder engine was that getting away from a standstill is a bit trickier and the engine was unpleasantly louder in first gear. The performance of the 1.0 was fine once I was on the move. The indicated mpg on a cross country run was slightly poorer from the 1.0  than I would get from my  1.4.

I guess my conclusion is I'd rather have the 1.4.

But go for a test drive to compare with your Yeti.

Sorry, have owned 2 mk1 estates a mk2 hatch and estate. Allthough it was rare that i drove the hatch, it was swmbos, i allways found it large and less chuckable compared to the estates possibly due to the reduced visibility around the rear quarters/ back window (wide C pillars, long rake of rear screen and extended boot lip) especially when slipping into smaller gaps.

As for space you only loose out by the rake of the screen, we had 4 greyhounds so the estate was a must, couple of dogs hatch will be fine, with the seats down, but as mentioned with big dogs unless the stay laid down it may be a bit cramped claustrophobic for them due to raked rear screen. Bare in mind you cant get the variable floor in the hatch so step with seats folded is much deeper, estate easier to load. Dont know about mk3 but water run off into boot is less in the estate than the hatch when opening in the rain.

 

Having said all that we are considering a new car and now down to 1 dog swmbo is in favour of the hatch for a change, i think i will end up agreeing to save a grand and then regret the decision the first time i have to buy from ikea or go to the tip.

so the indicated consumption on the way up was less than 4.5.... that's an average of 85km/h and essentially zero traffic, a 300km run, dark, ambient around 0C, two up, lightly loaded, standard tyre pressures, no special attention paid to consumption. Lots of cruise control, spiked winter tyres... translates to approx 62mpg. Around town that drops to 6.x / 100. 

 

I don't see any issue with takeoffs, though I did have one in a hurry.. then again, you only need third for 120km/h :D I've got really used to it. We're now at 39k kms.

 

The only time I've felt the need for more power was this summer when we were four-up, loaded and it was >30C outside.

More revs needed with a slower engagement of the clutch to get away from any standstill (compared to my 1.4 Octavia ) Very noticeable in the 1.0 Fabia I drove. 

Your report of actual ownership is much more relevant than my comparison .:biggrin:
