4 wheel alignment

Featured Replies

Sorry to bother u guys and gals. Maybe has already been covered before. My Octavia is lowered on HR springs.   I am wondering if the car can get a 4 wheel alignment to stop the tyres from wearing on the outside ? My mechanic says no but am not 100 sure. Any help would be great. If not then time to raise car back up.  Thanks.

Wearing the outside edge of the front tyres could be:-

low tyre pressure, up the pressure.

toe in to much, can be adjusted.

positive camber, not likely especially if the car has been lowered.

This usually makes the front tyres have more negative camber than is normal in the standard car.

Driving to fast/aggressively, don't know what can be done about this.

Get someone to do a four wheel alignment check.

I believe that these can be adjusted:-

Front Toe, Rear Toe and Rear Camber.

Thanks AG Falco

A very well known is the Hunter alignment system - just give a search for this.

Look here:- www.alignmycar.co.uk

Most places will check it for free ( ask ) and you get a printout of the results.

Thanks AG Falco

yes it can.

Do you have any figures on what it's set at?

I have discovered the car can't be aligned if you don't have the settings which I don't. Any help??

Not sure where you're going for alignment. If you use somewhere with a Hunter system they can pop in your Reg and it tells them the settings. Had mine done more than once and its on lowering springs.

problem is car is lowered so they are saying settings are different. Any one have settings??

Can you ask the advice of the company that lowered it or a local specialist that deals with car mods?

What do you want to achieve?

Start by using the figures that the car should be set at and see if the car/tyres perform how you want them to.

Adjust if necessary, if the tyres start to wear unevenly and/or the car behaves abnormally.

Give us your reg and I can look them up for you? PM me.

Thanks AG Falco

I'd recommend you find a new alignment tech.  A good tech should be able to look at the wear and adjust accordingly.  A good shop, if unsure, should at least be willing to throw it up on the rack and try and get their head around the issue before pleading ignorance.

Unless it's lowered to the weeds the factory specs should be close enough.

I'd set it up like this:

Tyre pressures: 36psi F&R

Front

Castor 7° 47′ ± 30′.  A fraction more on the left is a good thing to counteract road camber.

Camber: -44′ ± 30′ with a maximum of 30' difference between sides.  More on the left is OK to counteract road camber.  More on the right will have it drifting into the gutter.  This is adjustable by moving the engine subframe.

Total toe: 10’ ± 10′

Rear

Camber:  -1° ± 15’  this is adjustable with the eccentric bolts (2 per side)

Total Toe: 10’ ± 10′ this is adjustable with the eccentric bolts (2 per side)

If your tech doesn't know this stuff or how to find it then run as fast as you can.  It's basic knowledge.

I'd be interested to see the before and after readings.
