Aftermarket auto headlight switch and sensor problem...

Featured Replies

I know this has been discussed various times but I see everyone has managed to set it up successfully but I am really getting wound up I cannot get this to work...

So I bought an Auto light switch and sensor from AliExpress, I know others with the same car as mine who have done it and it works with no issues.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Coming-Leaving-Home-AUTO-Headlight-Head-Lamp-Switch-Light-Sensor-Module-Upgrade-Chrome-For-Skoda-Octavia/32892624047.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.5f074c4dY0xzrj

All set up correctly but the auto function does not work, everything else works and switching sidelights, headlights etc on and off manually all work. The LED on the Auto on the switch does not light up and the lights do not come on. All I can think is the sensor that detects the daylight or lack of light is not working.

My car is a 2010 VRS facelift.

Can anybody please help?

You can try and test it by covering or pointing a torch at it. If it's not working, given it's completely aftermarket and you won't get any diagnostics from it, the seller is probably the best option.

Hopefully they can offer some advice or even an instruction manual for it...

This would be a nice feature! Why doesnt these cars come with auto as standard? Lights starts with car, lights go out when you shut off/take the key out.. All Volvos I've driven had this as standard. I cant help you though.

Sellers from Aliexpress should be pretty keen in working everything out with you, they dont get any money until you've clicked that you're satisfied with the order. Hope you get it going!

@andreasw - that's not auto headlights... Auto-headlights measure the ambient light and turn the headlights on/off based on that.

What you're describing is permanent running lights or Scandinavian mode. You can turn it on with VCDS if you'd like :)

Have dropped them a message. I know doing this works but wasn't sure if my car is the problem with wiring (shouldn't be) or if I just have a faulty sensor.

Aha! Please tell me more, I have the OBDeleven dongle. Does it include long coding to get it working?

There isn't much on the car side to go wrong. If you can turn the headlights on, the auto sensor should be able to do it too...

@andreasw - I haven't got a pre-fl to confirm, but I'd try changing byte 0, bit 3 in the CECM (09). At least based on this screenshot, it looks to be correct:

Hmm, I'll look into it. Really interested in getting vcds. Seems like a good thing to have :) Should have thought of that before spending £100 on OBDeleven...

I wouldn't mind VCDS or somebody local to take a look.

Some VCDS stuff was turned on when I got the car already. I even have coming home lights and leaving lights coming on with this switch, just doesn't auto headlight oddly...

Bit 6 - Rain/light sensor installed. I have looked at my car and do not think I have a rain sensor. Is this normal for a facelift VRS?

@HarleQuinn - you're car is a facelift with a BCM not a CECM, the coding will be very different. That image was for andreasw who has a pre-fl with a CECM :)

I don't think the vRS had a rain light sensor as standard. Take a look at the rear view mirror mount from outside of the car. If it's a round dot, there is no RLS installed. If it's a square ish shape roughly 5x5cm large, then it does have a RLS. Example of a RLS is below:

If it does have a RLS, throw that rubbish sensor away and just use a normal auto light switch... It will need coding and possibly an extra wire from the switch to BCM.

Deffo do not have a rain sensor then! Just the circular mount, Guessing it is not standard on the VRS then!

I just wanted to rule out things interfering with each other...

More acronyms for me to learn, what are BCM and CECM?

Body control module and comfort something module?

I think they are:

BCM: Body Control Module

CECM: Central Electronics Control Module

CCM: Comfort Control Module.

Earlier cars had separate CECM and CCM. Newer cars have both combined into a single BCM.

This is a picture of my interior. It's a FL right?

Maxidot display version one can see... wingmirror shape... red hazard warning button... climatronic control shape... steering wheel shape... may be wrong, but that very much looks like a pre-facelift octy to me.

Edit; Just noticed you said on the sidebar it's a 2007 model... It's definitely a pre-fl!! :D

Ah okay, but interior must have had a facelift?

A FL would have a different instrument cluster, steering wheel, climate control panel, headunit and hazard switch. Most parts are shared though.

Something like this:

Mines definitely pre FL. Thanks for clarifying. Sorry for the thread hijack. :blush

Hi everyone,

I got a replacement auto light unit and have installed it. Still no joy but here is what I can confirm.

It works but does not operate the headlights. When the auto function kicks in it makes the DRL's brighter. The DRL's are on via maxidot but the switch basically turns them up to be brighter and the headlight/rear lights do not come on. I am wondering if there is maybe something via VCDS which is messing with the operation?

If the normal headlight switch works, the Chinese auto light kit should work...

All it needs to do it connect the correct two pins together to pretend the light switch is in the 'on' position.

Might be worth using VCDS to see what position it thinks the light switch is in when the auto function kicks in. Sounds like it's turning the lights off if the DRL are getting brighter.

Thought this could be the case, I don't know anything about VCDS myself so will try to track down an expert! Thank you :)
