Is the CFGB a reliable engine?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I am thinking of buying a Skoda Superb MJ2012 Combi, TDI 125kW 170BHP.

Engine Code is CFGB (or CFG - whats the B for?).

Could you tell me something about this engine?

Is it reliable?

It has a DPF, is this reliable?

I read about problems with the EGR valve clogging up.

Is the valve easily replaceable or reachable or does half the car need to be torn apart?

Thank you

CFGB is the whole engine code. In recent years, VAG have moved to 4 character engine codes: the first three often signify a base engine design and the fourth indicates a subvariant of it.

In general it's a good engine provided it's maintained properly. Low SAPS, synthetic oil only (to VAG specification 507 00). Nice and powerful out of the box too.

It does have a DPF and it is generally not a problem provided it gets regular opportunities to regenerate. Repeated interrupted regenerations will cause soot buildup and can result in premature failure. If you don't use a low SAPS oil, the ash from that will get into the DPF and kill it prematurely. Ash buildup is inevitable anyway, but will take quite a long time: owners on this site are reporting close to 300,000 km without any problems. Remember that the DPF is a wear item: it will eventually fail and need replacement but that takes quite a while.

EGR is a weak spot on this engine, especially on vehicles that have had the 23R6 update (the EA189 emissions fix) as the new map uses more EGR. If you have had the 23R6 update and the EGR fails Skoda will replace it free of charge. If you have to pay for it, it's expensive: it's about 6 hours' labour to change it plus the cost of the part, so it could be over €800 depending on where you are. The EGR is located at the back of the engine block sandwiched between the block and the DPF: replacement involves dropping the DPF out of the way to gain access.
