Winter tyres on (temps rising!)

Featured Replies

Just re-fitted my winter tyres to my Rapid / Toledo, although I see temps are now rising again!

I'd forgotten just how much the ride quality improves on the 15" steel rim / Continental Wintercontact TS850 combo.  They seem no worse in grip terms and the road noise is considerably reduced, compared with the OEM 17" Alloys / 215/40/17 Bridgestone's.

I had considered running the 15" steel rims year-round, with All-season tyres, but cannot bear to let the Conti's go to waste. They have seen me through 3 winters (on 1 Rapid, 1 Spaceback and last year on the Rapid / Toledo) and they still have ~6mm tread remaining.

I run All-season Cross Climates on my other car (4x4 Yeti TDi) and these have proved both excellent in all conditions, and surprisingly long-lasting.

During the frosty starts last week I decided to book my car in to get new winter tyres. On my way home from having them fitted it was 14 degrees outside B)

I'm finding the ride quality about the same as the 17"s with Bridgestone tyres but the fuel economy is much better on 15" alloys.

I decided to go for Dunlop Ultragrip 9 tyres after reading lots of reviews so I'll see how I get on this year. It's the first time I've ever had winter tyres so anything is going to be better than summer tyres once the temperature drops.

Not sure about wear at the current temperatures with it being warmer than I need to have the winters on so I'm taking it very easy on corners.

There is one odd thing though - I thought that I would have to reset the TPMS for the new wheels but I haven't and it hasn't beeped at me.

edit - having checked this, the 215/40R17 tyres have a circumference of 74.6 and the 185/60R15 is 74.5 so not a great deal of difference
