turbo failure?

Featured Replies

yesterday i was returning from a 300 mile trip i was doing 70 mph and come to a stop.  upon pulling away again the engine lost power and was very sluggish struggled to get up to 40 mph and wouldnt rev past 2000 ish rpm . no strange noises no lights so i carried on to get home about 3 miles eventally the glow plug light started flashing and also a brief puff of grey smoke out the exhaust . i left the car to cool and tryed it again later that day it started fine and no lights but still no power at all it also made a rattleing whooshing noise just the once ive read codes and its come up p0299 does this seem like turbo problem? and help woild be much appreciated

thanks mate i will have a look tomorrow and try the same .bit of a update ive been out and driven for less than half a mile .wont rev above 2000rpm and it struggles to get their and also the turbo was very hot very quick and when i shut the engine of the turbo rattles however still no smoke or anything turbo shows 0 psi on live data

The rattle and heat from the turbo doesn't sound good. Is it getting any oil supply?

Have you checked the condition of the air filter and that there are no kinks or blockages in the air box pipe / air inlet? I once had one of the Ford vans at work suddenly lose power and look like the turbo had gone. Turned out the servicing place had missed changing the air filter on the service and it had become blocked.

Just thinking that an airway blockage might reduce the cooling on the turbo and cause low pressure on the input which might explain the turbo running hot and the vanes being held back making the bobbin rattle. I would check the inlet to the airbox for blockages, particularly if it is at the base of the windscreen

i havent checked for oil stavation yet but the cars only done 70k with full history and being a 2012 hoping it escapes the oil pump problems .i have done the last 2 services useing high quality oil and filters was only done around 2 weeks ago ive looked around cant see anything obvious all pipes look perfect no leaks

I think this sounds like air starvation:

Air inlet is restricted -> Exhaust spins turbo up -> Turbo blades generate a vacuum because of restricted air supply -> When turbo hits a certain number of RPM, vacuum exceeds exhaust pressure -> Turbo stalls -> Rattle

Restricted air supply would also prevent the turbo from cooling and limit the RPM as the engine couldn't ingest enough air.

Has the mesh on the air inlet that stops large items getting sucked into the air filter got blocked with "organic autumn debris" ?

I'm not the greatest engine expert but I also think that the turbo can stall or reverse on lifting the throttle if the dump valve is stuck.

i have checked the air intake all clean and a new mann filter only a few weeks old .egr seems to be fine according to diagnostics as does the dpf it had not long done a regen . i really think it has to be the turbo although not the ushal symtoms . im really thinking about getting a new turbo and gettting rid of the dpf and egr to reduce future problems

If you're thinking about a new turbo and you don't like the price of an original one, a friend of mine with an Octavia I vRS had his failed turbo changed for a Turbonetics one. It was significantly cheaper than a Skoda one, performance was good and he was very happy with it.
