Chunks of carbon coming out of exhaust on startup

I've never noticed this before until yesterday, but when starting up my Fabia it starts chucking chunks of carbon out of the exhaust, it only does it when the cars warming up. Could this mean my egr is clogged. or is it due to cold start up?
