Windscreen streaks - removal

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a number of streaks on my windscreen which I think have been caused by wax/polish from the roof flowing onto the screen and damaging it. The streaks are more noticeable when the screen is wet/damp and remian visible for some time when driving. They eventually disappear when the screen warms up a bit. Does anyone here know how to go about removing them?

Cheers.

Usually some sort of degreasing agent, so you could try Isopropyl Alcohol, Methylated Spirits, Nail polish remover (be very careful) or White Vinegar, alternatively try the household cleaner Flash which you can use for floors on a cloth.

Methylated spirits or a glass cleaner. I'd avoid nail varnish remover as it will damage car paint. Don't forget to clean the blades as well.

Put plenty of screen wash solvent into your bottle. Repeat as necessary.

That's why I said be careful, but any of those should be fine as they will remove the stuff from the glass.

Wilko also sell spray- on glass cleaner for a modest price. I  meant do not use anything containing acetone- you need to be more than careful. :bearhug: with me,  I used to do solvent resistance testing of plastics.

Fairy liquid and a clay bar will also work well.  I recently started to clean my windows this way as it's quicker than polishing and it removes all the crap off the glass.   I then apply a water repellant coating.

If ever any of my windows get greased up, I use white spirit. Strips off the gunk from both the windows and the wipers and gets the window prepped for a coating of Turtle Wax Clear Vue rain repellent.

I also use neat windscreen wash. I feel it's more effective at cleaning the windscreen when you need it to be cleaned.
