Battery Charging Points 2016 model

Featured Replies

have the hatchback model with the AGM battery and have noted that chargers should have their Negative lead connected to the point on the body adjacent to the battery not the negative post on the battery. I've noticed that the heavy cable appears to be held by a large plastic nut to the body negative.

Is it really a plastic nut or a slip-on cover over a proper metal nut? Have tried pulling on it but it doesn't seem to want to move, and the thought of taking a spanner to a plastic nut leaves me cold, especially on such a vital connection.

I want to permanently attach the eyelet connection wire that came with my new CTEK MSX 5.0 charger for ease of topping-up during the winter.

Anyone with experience that they can share please?

As I recall - It's a slip on/push on cover.  Just get a flat blade screwdriver under it - mind the paint though - use a bit of cardboard/plastic to protect ! - and ease it off.

Cheers Mithane, will try next charge.

Flopsy, have you really got an AGM battery fitted as standard, or is it not just an ELB battery?

obviously an AGM will have that printed or labelled on it, as will an ELB or is that an EFB, the bit between the battery and the body is used by the BEMS ie battery energy management system.

you're right, it's an EFB more cheapskate than AGM. Had the charger on it for about 5 hours yesterday and it was quickly through stages 2-5, skipped 6 and then onto stage 7. Car actually Stop/Started a couple of times today, first time in a long time.

Yes, all these batteries that are fitted to cars that have BEMS need to be connected and charged between the +ve terminal and the car main earth point near the battery.

I was just checking in case VW Group had started fitting AGM instead as, as you say the cheap skate option, the EFB, which is fitted to my wife's August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS - and which I checked recently with my CTEK battery tester and it is still looking like it is in extremely good health without getting external charging top ups.  My car sleeps in the garage most of the time, it has an AGM battery and I keep my CTEK charger connected to it at all times to keep it alive, it is also looking like it is in extremely good health and it is getting on for 8 years old, also that car has a boot mounted battery so it has very handy charging points under the bonnet, ideal for connecting the CTEK charger to quickly, though for accurate health checks, I need to connect the battery tester directly across the battery in the boot.
