Hi All, I'm picking a my first Skoda  this weekend, it's the Superb 1.4 TSI ACT SE L Executive 2016, I know to expect the mpg to be a good 10% lower than stated on the sales blurb, but now I'm hearing it any thing up 30% lower so your looking at 39 mpg against the listed combined at 56. Just thought this would be a good site to establish the facts. I also know it depends on how you drive but there must be a middle ground. 

Had a 2017 1.4 TSi 150 PS (with ACT) for about 18 months now. On a 430 holiday drive to Scotland we have seen 55 mpg (not hanging about - average speed over 60 mph) but if its used in town for short trips it will drop into the high 30's. Overall so far its done just over 45 mpg (calculated). Like most cars the dash display lies but its not bad compared to some.

 

Had the same engine in a Leon 1.4 TSi but that had 140 PS and no ACT. On a long run it would do about 52 mpg and about the same in town, in 3 1/2 years it averaged about 45 mpg.

 

If you were expecting 56 mpg - 10% overall (about 50 mpg) you are going to be disappointed but remember its a big car with decent power and performance.

 

The wife has a Fabia 1.0 TSi 110 PS and that is averaging just over 50 mpg but its not a quick or anywhere near as big.

 

20 years ago we struggled to get 45 mpg overall from a diesel, 25 years ago we had a 1.8 Blubird petrol and that would only average 30 mpg with no performance whatsoever.

 

Think you need to be more realistic with your expectations.

I’ve picked my 1.4t Act superb estate today and done a day visiting customers on the way back from Cardiff where I bought the car.

Ive been legal all day and only booted it a couple of times, the rest of the time using ACC or very steady acceleration. Car is showing 42.6mpg, but showing 500 miles left after 185 miles since I filled up this morning. The fuel needle has barely moved either, hasn’t dropped by a quarter yet, so who the heck knows?

I’d expect 45+ on the motorway at 70ish I not a little more.

 

The car though is absolutely fab (not Fabia!, lol). Quiet, comfortable, full of tech, Canton stereo is in the main pretty bloody good, pan roof brightens up the day and the ambient lighting makes the early dark nights it really pleasant space to sit. Lights are really good, 7 speed dsg is seamless and the car handles ok for a supertanker.

 

My old insignia diesel only managed 46-47 so I’d say the Skoda is doing pretty well for a small engine in a mahooosive car.

 

Fuel economy drops like a stone when you floor it though! Surprised at the fuel tank size, got 66 litres in. A colleagues 2.0 litre petrol A4 avant only holds around 55 litres.

No use for you at least but for the 280s among us.

 

Across 1857 litres since I got the car at the end of January 2018 98% of which was Tesco 99 I've averaged 33.93 MPG according to the car, and 33.52 MPG when calculated myself.

 

That's a lot of motorway using ACC where I'm often happy at 65 for a less stressful drive. Plenty of pain in the arse drives in and around London though. Saw a new low of 22mpg on a 23 mile drive to work in mad traffic the other day. 

 

This is with stop/start running, mostly lift and coast up to junctions/roundabouts without holding people up, keeping good distances on motorways etc. Obviously with the occasional heavy foot moment in there too. 

 

My car typically stays in Comfort unless I need some poke in which case It kick it to Sport for maybe 10 seconds which is more than enough time to have hit whatever limit might be in force. 

 

I did try a tank of Eco just 2 tanks ago and even ran it until it actually ran out (a mistake, not on purpose). MPG wasn't any better than my regular tanks. I was also babying it more than usual. Maybe it's because much of my driving is on motorways where the Eco maps can't do much.

There is no 'Sales blurb'  from manufacturers for the Euro 5 or 6 engines up to the new Euro6 d temp that gives any 'Real World' driving a car on the road with people and stuff in it figures with EU Testing, just comparisons in a Temperature Controlled building and for comparison', and even that was being cheated.

EDIT. This page seems to have gone to be replaced by linking to the WLTP one.

 

So it is the WLTP / RDE now and even that is not about cars with people and luggage in, so the 1.4 TSI is discontinued and only SEAT have WLTP Tested and got approval on the 1.4 TSI

in the SEAT Alhambra. 

VW, Skoda, AUDI and SEAT needed messing about and a GPF fitted and odd engine management to get 1.5 TSI EVO's Certificated.

Offski constantly uses the 'cheat' word in the fuel test context but with regard to the latest 1.4tsi series there is no real evidence of that.

He is right that the NEDC tests are conducted in laboratory conditions with a limited set of variables and parameters so they only allowed comparisons between vehicles rather than meeting the infinite number of real life situations that exist.

The test did not account for really cold days, hot days, airconditioner use, full loads, aerodynamic performance, winter fuel, lead foots or hypermilers, diesel regens etc etc.

 

The reality for the 1.4tsi in both Octavia and Superb is that many owners report an overall average mpg in the mid 40's, with highs of 60+mpg in exceptional conditions and lows of 30's in poor conditions or many short runs.

 

I think the OP will be pleasantly surprised with the versatility and potential economy of the 1.4tsi engined Suberb especially after learning how best to utilise its characteristics

I know you guys are taking MPG on petrol. But I wanted to chip in on the MPG. I've the 2.0 TDi 150. SUPERB Estate. I manage to get 63 to 65mpg on a tank, sometimes more. On some journeys I can get over 75Mpg.That is at a steady 60 to 65mph using ACC. That gives me about 900 to 950miles on a full tank. My 2015 1.6 Octavia managed easily 75mpg. I manged to get over 90 on one 25mile commute to work. There were roadworks so I was stuck at 50mph.

Update on the purchase... Though I'm  in the same boat as PMA-Bob, joining the M6 north at J17 exiting at j20 most of the time spent in a 50 limit, I'm getting 57/60 north bound and 50/55 south. With a little general running around over the weekend having completed 500 miles since purchase and fuelling it states I'v got 350 miles left in the tank based on current consumption. 

So pleased with the car, great ride/drive, well equipped and the little touches like the ambient lighting, lane assist, blind spot (and many more toys)  way better than the 65 plate VW Touareg,
