Oil pressure light coming on

Featured Replies

Hi al as per topic got the dreaded oil pressure light coming on . 2.0 vrs estate 2006 boa engine .... just had an oil change too , was wondering anyone close to me that has  done the pick up pipe cleanup /oil pump replacement and could possibly do mine too cash waiting its still driving and no knocks or bangs and still ticks over smoothly so i guess its just low pressure , anyone want to take the job on ? i can bring to you or you come here and pull it apart ? id rather get it fixed than junk it !!

sorry autocorrect BWA engine

Since it happened just after an oil change, did you check that the same viscosity oil has been used?

Have you checked the correct oil filter is fitted and fitted correctly (seals,o rings all there, and not doubled up or old seals,o rings left behind).

hey thanks for the reply it was on off intermittently so thought an oil change and filter might help the blockage if there was one .all is ok but i noticed the hydraulic noise at the top of the engine takes longer to go away .ie when first started slight metalic noise for 8 seconds before all goes quiet before the oil pressure issue .now it takes 30 seconds for the nouse to go .the engine is still strong .pulls well and is smooth

Low oil pressure. Will cause damage unless you fix it.

xman that is why im trying to get it fixed , anyone know of the actual location off the oil pressure switch i have been over this engine and cant find it anywhere , i have a sensor plate or something on the sump could i the  a built it switch in there too ?

Always makes me smile when we have a low oil pressure situation and the owner states it still pulls well :D

If i ever have the oil pressure light appear I would **** a brick and wouldn't drive the car until it had been investigated

superbtwm ^^    i know it worried me too when its came on but im was in the middle of nowhere and didn't have any choice , im an ex mechanic so i listen to the engine and try to take it easy . i have tried to look for the oil pressure switch and until now never had a diagram . so i will look again and replace and re try . 3 weeks in the engine dosent sound any different so thought is try the switch anyway . if anyone is local to me and fancies some cash for christmas to clean the pick up pipe etc be my guest !!

I would say you could have a dangerously low oil pressure problem. That 30 second metallic noise could very well be metal to metal contact. Cam lobes or bearings being stripped.

Remember the oil pressure light only comes on when you have virtually zero pressure. You may think you fix it by changing the switch, but it is not an indicator you have the correct pressure.

Attach an oil pressure gauge and check the pressure to be sure.

My advice is not to ignore it, fix it.

xman thanks . i am trying to fix the issue . the oil pressure light generally comes on after around 1 mile of driving. the engine itself sounds ok . once the cold start up clears its quiet and ticks over like a watch , just need some one with knowledge of these engines to sort it , im a points and condenser mechanic so not used to all the new wiring and stuff i will get the pressure checked . i have vcds anything on there i can check reliably with real time blocks  and thanks for taking the time to reply

The oil pressure switch is an on/off thing, VCDS will tell you nothing that the warning light isn't already unfortunately.

There's a walk-through of sump off and cleaning here, for what I imagine is a similar engine, if not exactly your code: https://www.micksgarage.com/blog/golf-gti-oil-strainer-cleaning

thank you all for your replies i ill get this done asap once i replace the plastic y piece off the coolant pipe i broke this morning why i just dont let pros do this i dont know !! again if anyone out there is close to me wants the cash to do it let me know !!

Engine flush may help of you don't want to take off sump but on the other hand it might also cause further problems .

xman i agree years ago the flush used to push debris into hydraulic lifters and oil ways and end up blocking oil ways worse !!
