DSG Gearbox changes down unexpectedly

Featured Replies

I am still getting to grips with my 2014 Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI CR Elegance DSG.

The car is a pleasure to own and drive, apart from a few electrical gremlins, but the DSG gearbox seems uncoordinated.

It changes down when coasting downhill, not always a problem, but when it sometimes goes from 4th to 3rd at around 48 mph, I have to consider something is not quite right.

Any views on this?

Are you feathering the brake? In such situations the box will change down to assist with engine braking.

Unlike old-fashioned torque-converter auto boxes, which would, at all costs, hold onto a higher gear, the DSG will change down when it detects you coasting down a hill to aid with engine braking. The steeper the hill, the more it will go down the box.

No, not feathering. It just seems an extreme change at that speed. 48 mph is more suited to 4th gear. 3rd slows down with a jerk.
