Headlamp condensation

Featured Replies

Hi All.

I have significant condensation in the NS headlamp unit. It all looks good and I have no idea how the moisture has got in there, never had it before. Any one else suffered this ? MK2 2011 estate.

It’s relatively common, you can pop the headlamp out and dry it out using a hair dryer.

It coincides with wetter/colder weather, longer periods of lights on will drive the moisture out.

Hi MicMac.

Thanks for the reply. I cant accept that I am afraid. Its only in one headlamp unit, and should not happen in a modern car. The unit obviously has an ingress of moisture.

Modern headlights are vented so there is literally a hole to allow air in/out.

Small amounts of condensation are completely normal as the headlight cools drawing moist air in. It should clear when the headlights are used.

On my FL, I had one headlight start to mist up more than normal for a few days. I took it off and used a hairdryer to clear it and it's been perfectly fine since.

I would suggest you do the same given how easy the headlights are to remove. You can check it for damage at the same time and assuming it's in good condition, hopefully it'll be fine once it's been properly dried out.

Thanks Langers.

Learn something every day, just assumed they were sealed. Unfortunately its not a small amount. So I will have it out at the weekend and have a good look as well as dry it out, and see if there is any damage etc. I only bought the car in the summer and this has appeared after the heavy rain we had a few weeks ago, so reckon its getting in somewhere.
