Fridge Freezer in an Estate?

Featured Replies

My daughter has been offered a free second hand fridge freezer but we need to transport it about 20 miles to her flat (ground floor). I have searched but cannot find anybody who has got a 1750mm x 600mm x 655mm object into an Octavia II Estate. Has anybody actually done this? I hope that by removing the rear seat squabs and pushing the passenger seat fully forward it might go in cross corners and the boot lid may even shut. I do have the raised boot floor to make the loading easier and a level load area

I am aware that transporting them lying down is not recommended but we will leave it upright for a couple of days and rock it gently occasionally to allow the refrigerant to settle.

I do have some roof bars but getting the thing on the roof without dropping it may be a challenge.

I've had standard height internal and external house doors in the back of mine and although I had to move the front seats forward a bit they did fit with the boot lid closed, however they were flat to the boot floor as length available decreases with height somewhat due to curvature of the rear door.

It will easily go in their with plenty of room on the width.

Sounds like you know how to remove the seat squabs to make a flat loading area, to close the tailgate you will need to have the passengers backrest upright and the seat moved forward, having just measured there should just be room to get the 600mm width between the centre console and the B post/front passenger door.

Its the centre console that is the limiting factor on length, if you leave the rear seat squabs in and have a rising load area then the fridge can go over the top of it.

1.8m long is never a problem until it starts getting high like your fridge then the rake of the rear window comes into play.

Make sure the ashtray is closed before folding the rear seat squab forward or you may break it like I just did and spend 30 minutes fixing it in the dark, all good now though and I now know what I can and cannot load and why some things are harder in my MK2 than they were in theMK1

As said by others that will easily go in with room to spare.

I had a fridge freezer the same size in my estate :)

2.00m tall fridge freezer is the largest item I've had in mine.

Just folded the rear seats flat and moved the front seats forward as necessary, admittedly my belly was against the steering wheel lorry driver style!

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like it is a go-er so I will let my daughter know and I will report back next month when the deed has been done.

Yes all of us with combis have done a Richard Hammond at some time :D

I managed to fit an 8 foot x 4 foot dining table in my hatchback with the boot closed!

A rectangular one?

Yup! I took the rear seats out entirely, and pushed the front ones all the way forward. Think I had to take out the headrests too!  It was at a jaunty angle, but the boot closed.

I was very surprised.

Neither 8 foot nor 4 foot.

8 foot length would go in but would finish above the steering wheel, 4 foot width would not go through the rear hatch or fit anywhere within the cabin, not even close.

I carry 2.5 m melamine panels but they are only 600mm wide and interfere with gearchanges etc but otherwise doable and relatively safe, double that width is dreaming, I can get 3m long steel stud partitioning rails in at an angle but have to put padding between them and the windscreen and can only go 3 or 4 wide by one deep.

I once got an 8 by 4 sheet of hardboard in a Vauxhall Victor FE estate and could still just about drive but it was way over my head and wedged against the A pillars and sunvisors.

I shall have to measure it when I get home from work... Those are the sizes I have in my head, but it was a year ago now so I could well be wrong!

Edit: Found measurements in my documentation, it was a touch over 6ft by 3.5ft, so J.R. is indeed correct!

Dont worry, I had no confidence in what was in my head either and had to go out and measure.

1.8m 6 foot length by the available width can usually always be accomodated laying flat, that I know by heart, the width I was unsure of.

Having regularly carried most things known to man I can usually look at stuff and decide if it will go in easily, with difficulty or not at all, bikes are the most challenging.

One day in the future I will miss the sunroof that I had on the MK1, not for the sunshine but for carrying long stuff.

To be fair most estates can accommodate a fridge...

Thanks for all the advice.

Just to close this thread off we moved the fridge freezer today and it fitted ........ just!

I had to lay it on the doors as this gave the least width and by pushing the passenger seat fully forward and placing the fridge freezer diagonally we could just close the rear door. If I did not have the jumbo box it would have made more space.
