Almost back in the fold

Featured Replies

After a dalliance with a E class merc for 18 months im now buying a 1.6td pre-FL greenline Mk2 Soopy, as a 1.6 i assume it would have been afflicted by the "issues" but how do i know/check to see if Skoda have "fixed" it?

id rather it not have been fixed, it has 80k miles on the clock and full service history (stamped book every 10k miles)

do i need the VIN to check?

merry xmas all

Yes, all 1.6 Tdi on the Superb are EA189 type engines and are subject to the emissions fix.

When the fix is performed, the dealers put a sticker with "23R6" on it in the spare wheel well of the car.  It's not hard for a PO to remove it though.  It should be near the big white sticker that has the build and option codes that relate to the car.

In Ireland, we can put the Registration Number into the VAG Emissions fix check site and it says if your car needs it or has had it already. I'm not sure if that is provided in the UK - as you suggest, it appears to be just  VIN based EA189 Service Action Check

Sounds sweet. BTW - If the PO kept everything, then they may have a certificate from Skoda saying the emissions fix was done.  Also, Skoda may have written/stamped "23R6" in the Service book.

Welcome back! How did you find the E-class?

The most reliable way to check for the emissions update is to read the software number from the ECU. If it's above around 9970 then it's had the fix applied.

Welcome back again!  Would also be interested to hear what you thought of the E Class

Not much if he's back in a Superb.

So i had a new 15 plate 1.6tdi estate in April 2015, did 72,000 miles in 2.5 years, no faults, 55mpg average, tyres lasted 33,000 miles, brakes never needed changing

joined a taxi base and with 4 passengers plus luggage she could struggle just a bit so the Eclass was purchased for a bit of luxury and "exec" work.........(vanity purchase)

well that went wrong cos after that hardly got airports

been concentrating on school contracts, my lad got a 62 plated 508 SW on 80,000 miles for £3700 back in july and its paid for itself twice over.

The Merc is a E250 estate.........twin turbos, 7 speed auto, rear air suspension, staggered wheels and sports tyres... and 42mpg.....

I call it the money pit, it eats tyres, servicing is "OMG" and the space/ride isnt as good as my superb...........

:D Then you are right to be concerned. It is strange that it has every 10k service but WHERE has it sat since March and why. It would have been illegal to drive it without an MOT unless it was going to pre booked mot's a few hundred times  ever so slightly to be unlikely.

There may be a very good explanation............

Its a local car, garage says theyve had it in stock, i dont buy that....

its a nice car grrrrrr

If you do still like it then ask to see their purchase exchange paperwork to support that statement. If they say come back tomorrow or in a few hours so that can find the paperwork then again be very suspicious in my opinion. If it has sat there for all that time then you are in a good bargaining position as they want to move it from stock.

I can think of many reasons for the 8+ months of no useage (elderly driver stops driving, dies, probate sale, will, etc) but i can also come up with "Skoda "fixed it badly"

Totally agree as I bought my first Superb L&K in similar circumstances. The seller in my case was very open on behalf of the family (owner had died several months earlier) once I asked the question. Why it had been sat there.

Well, that shouldn't be a reason for a "lemon" - if the car had a problem post fix it means the problem was probably waiting to rear its head pre-fix (i.e. EGR marginal/clogged etc).  And if it had a problem post-fix, then the two year "tust building measure" warranty comes into play. To quote them, that covers "... a total of 11 components within the exhaust gas recirculation system, the fuel injection system and the emissions after treatment system: lambda probe, temperature sensor, EGR changeover valve, exhaust gas recirculation valve, exhaust gas recirculation pressure differential sensor, injector, high pressure pump, fuel rail, pressure control valve, pressure sensor, high pressure pipelines."

I've talked to a few owners here with Superb 1.6d's that have been fixed. The consensus seems to be a bit more HP, a bit more torque, more or less the same MPG - but definitely more frequent regens.  This agrees what the German automobile club (bit like the AA) said after testing a fixed Golf 1.6: they found a power increase of 6kw (8-9HP) and a torque increase of  10 Nm (7.8 ft lbs).  They also reported a slight increase reduction regards MPG on motorway driving.
