Difference between 150PS and 190PS diesel engines

Featured Replies

Planned to install aftermarket Webasto kit (EVO 5) but for my surprise the official catalogue didnt offer KIT-s for the 190PS engine but only for the 150PS 2.0 diesel and the shop selling it is not willing to do the installation. Does anybody know if there are any real physical diferences to the engines beside the software (and possibly turbo part)?

When I looked into the possibility of remapping from 150 to 190, I learned that it can't be done because the 190 uses a bigger turbo and a stronger gearbox. I believe that rest of the engine is physically the same, but don't quote me on it.

That was no reason that it could not be remapped though.  Who told you it could not be done?

Did you ask about upping it maybe 30 BHP from what it actually is if tested on the Dyno as standard?

I was thinking more of a tuning box as I wouldn't want to remap under warranty. I decided I'd rather not push it as even 180bhp would still be slow compared to my old car. Better to accept that it's a slow car and enjoy the ride. I do 90% motorway driving anyway - that's one of the reasons I changed to a Superb (the other being cost). Also, the gearbox in the 150BHP model is a MQ350, designed for max 350Nm of torque, which the engine already puts out as stock.

I really wanted to order the 190 model but they've stopped selling it with a manual gearbox. Tried the DSG and it was a very disappointing experience compared to the 8 speed slushbox I'd gotten used to, so I had no choice but to take the drop in power.

Just floor the accelerator and it will do twice the UK NSL 'eventually' and get caught enough times over the NSL and the speed that matters is that of Public Transport or shanks pony.

(got the T-shirt!)

Yeah, it gets there in the end. My old car would hit 60 in less than 6 seconds, so it's been a bit of an adjustment, but I'm really enjoying the comfort and have no regrets about changing. Besides, I still have my motorbike to play with. :D

From experience I’d say the 150 TDI is the better of the two. The 190 just doesn’t perform how it’s numbers would suggest. The 150 ‘s power delivery is smoother and accessible from lower revs. The 190 needs to be worked hard to exploit the extra ponies.

Physical differences IIRC; turbo, injectors, pistons.

Thanks for your positive comments. I've bought this car as a motorway cruiser and family transport, because that's how I use my car for 95% of the time these days. My old 330d M Sport had a fantastic powertrain with a very sharp handling chassis, but it was a big payment every month and rode like a skateboard at motorway speeds (you won't get a Xmas tree in the back, either, even with folding seats). It fit my idealistic notion of how a car should be built (straight 6, balanced, RWD etc), but didn't suit my needs at all.

Im absolutely chuffed with the relative luxury of the Superb and the fact that it destroys any BMW in terms of value for money. Appreciate your tip re the tuning box, but I've decided not to exceed the design limitations of the gearbox as I'm an engineer and very keen on mechanical sympathy. Would you believe that I never once used the launch control on the Beemer, not even to try it out?!

I totally agree with you - have driven Passat with the 150 engine and it felt much smoother in every way compared to my 190 and not at all less powerful, at least FWD version.

I love my 150 engine.  Plenty of power for me, and I like driving fast.  Love the torque.

I totally agree having driven both. The 150 TDI is the smoother and better drive.

Also fully agree with the above.  The 190's extra power is really only noticeable once you start pushing it beyond normal motorway speeds and the 150 is the smoother of the two.

I would add my thoughts that the 150 is a smoother choice. I found the 190, on a test drive, almost too violent for everyday driving whereas the 150 had plenty without the harshness. The 190 was definitely more grumbly than the 150. I bought the 150 and didn't regret it; except that I don't really like diesels and switched back to petrol as soon as I could justify the cost :)

Will this work on a 190 and what brand is it ??

Hi, I am interested in tuning box for a 150td if not suitable for the 190.

You guys do a deal if you want..........I don't even have the car yet!!

@Jackwex and @k.youngif you’re interested then please PM me. Thanks

Used a Chipexpress box on a Seat Leon 2.0 TDI 150. Made a great difference. Well worth it.

Has anyone managed galactic mileage using a tuning box ??

How did you "learn" this? "Bigger turbo", "stronger gearbox". Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Oh dear!

It does have a bigger turbo though. It’s one of the few physical parts that differ on the 190 vs 150.

The turbo etc isn’t a restriction but...the ECU is or can be.  Revo for example didn’t initially advertise a remap for the 150ps TDI as they only had success with flashing one of the two ECU’s via OBD.

I think that’s been worked around now though.

Yeah, I'm sure the turbo has more to give, but I think 190 is probably asking a lot from it, otherwise why would VAG bother to use a different model? The main thing that put me off the idea of a remap was the manual gearbox used in the 150 model. It's a variant of the MQ350, and that model number is eponymous with the maximum Nm of torque it was designed for. I suspect  (but don't know) the reason they stopped doing 190 manuals is because they wanted to ditch that other manual gearbox.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that the difference between the two models is more than just software. You can't buy the 150 model and make it into a proper 190 just by using a laptop. I'd also want to have confidence in the tuner knowing what he's doing. There's lots of young lads running around in old remapped TDis, and they're usually black at the back end from all the unburnt fuel they spew out. :notme:
