Tesco & VW plan free electric car charging points.

Featured Replies

Yaaaaay, finally, charging at my local Tesco. Free as well :D Though it's so close to home, we'd likely not bother.

The local rapid charger will be valuable, for when home charging fails or when needing to make unexpected trips. But being VW funded, I'd expect rapid charging to be CCS only. Not a problem when I get my hands on a Model 3

VW just need to get the e-UP! on sale with a bit more range and get the price lower of ones with not much range

and let Skoda get on with building a e-Citigo with range or a small car that can do maybe 150 miles.

A standard 7kW charger will be available for free, but drivers will have to pay for a faster service.

So only the 7kW charging points will be free...

That's a good thing.

Free rapid will just mean a PHEV blocking for hours, or an EV trying to get slowly charge up that last few %. Rapid should be thought of like petrol pumps, you pop in for 20min and on your way when your battery charge rate ramps down.

Free 7kW charger next to paid rapids is the best way to do this. People will have incentive to use the 7kW and leaving rapid available for splash&dash users.

Looks busy, @Roottootemoot is that an old Beemer parked in the charging bay?

Bring your own cable? Even for the 50Kw chargers?

Nothing in North Wales (quelle surprise) but my local Morrisons now has a 50Kw charger, so things are improving.

My 2 nearest Asda stores have had electric car chargers for at least 8 years (can't remember, so long ago), but dont know if they are free

(Kingston upon Thames and Roehampton stores)

Seen a few Asda's with charging points, but if anything like my local, it's extra spaces in the area preserved for those with kids( or so they think).

Parking restrictions on new developments and business parking could be relaxed to allow additional spaces.

For example EV spaces don’t count towards the limit up to a point. Maybe even a tax rebate if you have solar panels or other green energy and EV charging from that.

The Budget is on the 11th March so the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Transport might well improve the already generous scheme for Business's and Employers and for Developers and Land Owners.

No idea yet if it is just my local PodPoint @ Tesco but the 7 kW chargers are no longer charging for 15 minutes before cutting out if you do not claim them and start paying the 44 pence a kWh.

They cut out before 10 minutes has passed.  I can not find anything about Tesco (PodPoint)  having made any changes or doing a trial of changes.
