Scandinavian DRL mode on Fabia Mk III

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have used Carista to enable Scandinavian DRL mode on my Fabia Mk III but it has not had the expected effect (more information is in the Skoda Fabia owners forum and hopefully linked to below).  The long and short of it is that the DRLs remain on when the sidelights (aka front position lights) or headlights are turned on which should not happen because the DRLs are too bright and unfocussed for night time use (they risk dazzling other road users) and should instead turn off or significantly dim when sidelights or headlights are turned on.  I suspect the issue is that on cars with LED DRLs the DRLs will dim significantly when headlights are used whereas with ordinary bulb DRLs they would normally turn off completely, and the coding which Carista has applied does not take this in to account perhaps?  Someone in the thread commented that what I want is "easily done and can be coded in a few minutes if you have the tools".  I've opened a support case with Carista and they are being quite helpful and have said they will add it to the list of codings to investigate further and asked me to pass on any information I was able to get myself.  To this end does anyone know how to turn on Scandinavian mode DRLs properly on a Fabia Mk III with ordinary bulb based DRLs rather than LED DRLs please?  When I say turn on properly what I mean is,

Light switch in off position (i.e. DRLs only mode): Front DRLs and rear tail lights illuminate

Light switch in sidelight position: Front sidelights (aka position lamps) and rear tail lights illuminate, DRLs are turn off.

Light switch in headlight position: Front sidelights and headlights and rear tail lights illuminate, DRLs are turned off.

Kind regards, Alec

I know what you mean.

I f**ked my DRL/light settings too on the Rapid (Toledo) using Carista and cant get back to the factory set up.

Seems to be a common thing with Carista / OBDII.

I guess when they copied the VCDS software something went amiss.

Fortunately simply turning the feature off in Carista reverted mine to normal. Makes me a little reluctant to fiddle much more though!

Just tried this option on my Skoda with LED DRLs, and they do not dim when the main beam comes on when in Scandinavian mode, which makes no sense at all? Did a tweak outside the car with the app and when i turned off this mode (main beam still on) LEDs dimmed accordingly, when the mode activated they went full brightness. Surely in Scandinavian countries when they drive with the main beam on then dont drive with full brightness LEDs DRLs?

Will LED DRLs cause oncoming traffic dazzle when in combination with the main dipped beam?

They might well do.   Plenty with just DRL's on when they should have already put on Side & Dipped headlight in the gloom dazzle.

Yes... That's why they used to dim ;)

It sounds like whatever tool your using isn't making the right changes.

Thought that as well. It's Carista module. I have emailed them to make them aware of this discrepancy. The function is great however there is a clear fault in respect of non dimming DRLs especially the LED ones.

I think the problem is when these apps are created, they’re never updated for different model years. And the tool doesn’t seem to have any way of detecting your model year and then alerting that the apps are not compatible.

Not sure if you’ve seen how vocal I’ve been in highlighting that the apps should be avoided. This is just more evidence that coding yourself is the only way to ensure it’s done correctly (id go as far as saying avoid Carista altogether as well).

Coding the rear lights to come on as DRL in the Fabia is a two minute job (with OBDeleven and I’d assume VCDS). There really is no need to use an app. I’ve done it on my wife’s and all other lights behave as they should because I didn’t interefere with the coding for them.

I have reverted back to the factory setting DRLs wise. Kept cornering fog lights function only as that was my main reason for getting the Carista. Shame that there is no members with OBD11 or VCDS near me to assist a fellow member with this Scandinavian mode?

Hi all,

I have an update for this.

I also got Carista module to do some tweaks and in particular i was interested into Scandinavian mode, which unfortunately did not work as intended. Contacted Carista via "report a problem" on the app, and explained the issue, not expecting to hear anything. How wrong i was, within 24hrs i got an email from them:

Hello, we researched your inquiry regarding the Scandinavian DRL and have implemented some new customisation which should fix the problem. They will very soon be available in the beta-version of Carista. As soon as it's ready we'll give you access to it (of course, it's free) so you can try them. Thank you for your patience!

Then within 48hrs they contacted me again with the following:

Hello, the new beta is ready. My colleague will promptly send you an invitation for it with instructions how to get it on your phone. When you have it, could you please try the following:

-Scandinavian DRL: daytime running lights activate taillights and parking lights -> NO
-Use left taillight as daytime running light (step 1 of 2) -> ENABLED
-Use left taillight as daytime running light (step 2 of 2) -> ENABLED
-Use right taillight as daytime running light (step 1 of 2) -> ENABLED
-Use right taillight as daytime running light (step 2 of 2) -> ENABLED

The beta is valid for 1 month, after which you will automatically be removed (and you can continue using the regular version of Carista after that). If you are currently on a free trial, cancel it now; otherwise, the trial will convert to a real payment when it expires, regardless of whether you're in the beta.

All beta customisation are marked with a yellow "Send feedback" button. Please use that button to let us know which ones work and which don't. Also, if you run into any issues, with the app whatsoever, please reply here and let us know.

Ivan Angelov from Carista sent me a link to log into their BETA site and i tried the above, which works great. The rear lights come in L shape, not C as when they are on with main lights at the front, and numberplate lights do not come on either. Once the main beam comes on, LEDs dim as they should, and all rear lights come on as well as numbeplate lights. I am on the free trail until Feb (which is cancelled as advised by Carista).

Reported back to Carista that its working now and they replied as follows:

Hello, thank you very much for testing this, I really appreciate your effort. I would also like to thank you for reporting this issue to us in the first place.

May I please ask a favour from you? Right now the new customisation that you tested are only available in the beta version, which means that all people who have the official release will not see them. We need to have feedback from at least 3-4 users that they work in order to add them to the official release, and we would like to do that as soon as possible. If you have contacts on the BriSkoda forum who have the same issue with the Scandinavian DRLs, could you please ask them to write to us and we'll give them the beta so they can test too? Thank you!

The contact is Ivan Angelov from Carista if you wish to send them a message/email via the app so you can test it as well.

Hope this helps

I hope you informed them that the rear lights are in a ‘L shape’?

You may like the way they look and the fact that they ‘work’ but in reality they have missed a part of the coding off.

I know what you mean, will drop them a email with a photo, although I like this patern. There is a video of a guy from Slovenia on YouTube experimenting with different blocks which are to be lit up on the rear light cluster as the tail drls.

Thank you for your feedback, every little helps

Yes each bulb has its own code, I coded a MK2 Superb estate so the rear DRLs used just the vertical strips.

(I used VCP for this though as VCDS cannot do it)

I've tried the new options in the beta Carista and it worked well for me too.  The lights still illuminate in an L shape rather than the C shape and I've fed this back to Carista and asked if this is expected behaviour.  Otherwise the behaviour is as expected - the front DRLs extinguish when switching to the sidelight or headlight mode - much more acceptable.
