Steel wheels

Featured Replies

If I wanted to get some steel wheels and some 16” tyres, what wheels do I need to buy and where would I get them.

Do skoda sell them or can you get them else where???

I have 19s right now but I find them quite noisy and I’m just wondering if I had smaller wheels and bigger tyres would that improve.

I do t want to spend loads and I’m not really too bothered about looks. The 16 inch tyres come up very cheap compared to a 19 inch.

What size engine/type of fuel do you have? The calipers on the bigger engines need minimum 17"

  • Author

Oh I didn’t know that. I have the tdi 190 engine. So will most likely need the 17s.

Have a quick look at the tyre pressures sticker (usually inside fuel flap, or inside door frame), will often lists approved sizes.

Can buy spare wheels from Skoda or other suppliers.

Have a look at the tyres section in technical section, plenty of people choose steel wheels for winter tyres so lots of info there

16” will fit the 190.

Different tyres can make a big difference in noise

Look on the MyTyres website. Bought both a full set inc winters and singles with tyres in the past and their prices are way less than you will get in the UK. Delivery has always been fast considering they come form Poland. Brilliant service.

As an example a 6.5 x 16 steel with a 215 60 15 Nokian WR D3 (had them on the wifes last car and they were very good - quiet and after 3 winters and 12,000 miles still had 6mm tread - and they gripped very well) is £125.40 fully fitted and ready to bolt on. Just over £500 for 4 may sound a lot but try beating it locally. They also do summer and all season tyres.

+1 for MyTyres - used them several times for sets of (Nokian) winter tyres.

my 220 came with a 16" full size spare.

normal rims r 19"

True that - I didn't realise until today that putting on the spare tyre would disable the ACC.

Sometime in the near future I'll b investing in direct TPMS.

These ones did save me on two occasions within the same week though - happy with that.

p.s. steel wheels looks sheet

Fact is ANY TPMS system can give false alarms.

In my experience of indirect TPMS since 2005 its absolutely fine. In those 13 years its alerted me to 2 punctures with no false alarms. In each instance the alarm has come on with an approx 10 psi drop in pressure, plenty of time to swap to a spare (if available) or pump up the tyre to get to a safer spot.

With direct TPMS we had one puncture and we were alerted with a 4 psi drop in pressure. No false alarms.

Beauty of indirect is simple, no expensive valves like direct which can become faulty and in some cases actually snap. The cost of a replacement valve with the necessary programming can be very high and I have heard on one forum where owners had been waiting weeks for dealers to obtain the specific valve. No doubt they could have obtained a generic valve faster but they were hoping for a warranty replacement. In both cases the cars were off the road due to having no spare. Use of the tyre sealant in the repair kit can wreck the valve as well since its impossible to remove it.

I drove from 1974 to 2005 with no warning system and survived. Had a more than a few punctures in that time but spotted them well before they caused a problem when driving since the cars always acted strangely with a soft tyre.

Indirect TPMS is more than adequate. I do not want the added expense of servicing the valves with the direct system, makes tyre replacement very expensive as if its not already expensive enough.

built in Indirect TPMS

warns about there is problem, you can only guess what problem and is it real problem

I'm not sure which car that's from, I'm sorry but that is just plain wrong, at least for me.

Did u not see the pictures I posted up earlier?? The indirect TPMS on the Superb tells u exactly which wheel is in trouble.

And the 2 out of 2 warnings I've had in the past 16 months have been spot on accurate.

Prior to that, with my MY11 Octavia RS, I've had probably 2 or 3 false warnings in the 6 yrs.

Combined with a tyre gauge, which u should rely on, the indirect TPMS is more than adequate.

Missing word

I was planning on buying steel 16” rims for S3 being delivered in January but when I narrowed down to ones of an known manufacturer and included the covers which won’t fly off on the first turn it ended up being very close to aftermarket alloy rims.

I’m attaching the combo (wheels+tyres) I got. As I’m in Croatia, I had to pay significantly more for the same thing than 700 GBP you would get on MyTyres. Good thing about this exact rim model is that it’s supposed to be 100% compatible (no rings or new bolts) with OEM rims. They also carry lastest set of certificates (ECE) so no legal complications are expected.

  • 4 weeks later...

Has anyone found a supplier of decent priced 17" steel wheels? Ie less than a cheap alloy? The ones ive tried give draw a blank. Had steels and winter tyres on my last car (mondeo 2.5T) got me everywhere in the snow last year.  My superb is petrol 4x4 but still concerned about lack of outright grip / braking from such wide summer tyres (eagle f1) .  Chazzy
