New Owner of 2.5 year old L&K- Warranty Advise

Featured Replies

Hello all,

im new to the site so please be nice! Just bought a 2.5 tear old L&K diesel DSG 150 with 32k on the clock. I’m going to be doing pretty high mileage for work and was thinking of taking out an additional warranty to start when the manufacturer one runs out.

Has as anyone had any experience of Skoda’s extended warranty (really expensive, but quite comprehensive) or with companies such as Warranty Direct etc?

Any my info would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks.

Oh im based in the UK too.

I’ve Warranty Direct in the past and it’s OK as long as you carefully read the small print.  They don’t pay for any diagnostic work so you could end up with a large bill for that whilst they pay only for the actual repairs.

In my case they covered a failed fuel pump relay which cost about £15 but refused the £200+ diagnostics which found it.  That being said there was no issue when I had a gearbox failure and I paid the £75 diagnostics whilst they paid over £3,500 to fix the box.

They used not cover some of the electronics or entertainment system and can be challenging about wear and tear on items you might not think were of that type.  They are cheaper for a reason.

I don’t have my S3 any longer, but I have maintained an OEM warranty on my X6.  Not cheap but it covers almost everything with no argument - hence the additional cost over aftermarket.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Khaki, i am an ex warranty manager previously at vw and skoda dealerships.

The skoda extended warranty is through a company called mondial.  To be fair most extended warranties are very similar. They all have their exclusions.  Some have an excess (i think this depends what level of cover you go for) With skoda's own extended warranties dealers are "usually" more willing to help etc.

Dealers have a portal that we used to process the claims. Whereas if its a non skoda one we have to ring the company and if we didnt have an account with the company it can be a bit of a pain to invoice, especially if you have an excess, as we had to split the invoice.

The skoda warranty exclusions from what i remember are: wiring, seals, wear and tear items, infotainment systems.  There will be more but thats all i can remember from the top of my head. The dealer should have a booklet/leaflet which tells you.

Hi, is that the same if you took out the extended warranty when purchasing the car from new - that its with Mondial rather than Skoda?

No i thats through skoda themselves i do believe.

Pretty sure Skoda are like Seat with regards to extended warranties, they are both VAG after all. I had an extended warranty on the Leon but since I never had a single issue I did not bother with the Superb, lets hope its the right decision.

Buy the warranty before the car is registered and the extension has exactly the same terms and exclusions as the standard 3 year warranty.

Buy the warranty after its been registered and many items are excluded plus there is an excess on every claim.

As for aftermarket warranties its generally accepted that its better to put a sum of money into the bank and use it if necessary. There are many complaints about these products simply because they excluse more than they accept.

My brother has an Audi with an extended warranty. The window wouldn't wind up. It turned out to be a broken cable and they said it was wear and tear. Luckily enough the garage he bought it from got involved and they eventually paid for it but it was a struggle.

In my experience the first thing they do is try and get out of paying. This seems to be a default position.
